A bold scene in the web series Mrs & Mr Shameem, featuring Nauman Ijaz and Saba Qamar, has stirred controversy.

A Zindagi original series, the show centres on the soft-spoken Shameem (Nauman), who falls in love and marries his best friend Umaina (Saba).

But they face several hardships as their relationship does not abide by society’s typical norms.

The scene shows them on a bed and chatting. However, the conversation divided viewers.

Many fans expressed their disappointment, questioning the actors’ choices in taking on such controversial roles.

Some users highlighted that the bold content seemed at odds with Nauman and Saba’s public personas.

One user remarked: “I thought they were acting in a Netflix series, but they’re Pakistani actors.”

Another wrote: “This looks like a scene from a Netflix series. It’s a new level of indecency.”

Nauman Ijaz, known for his pious image, faced particular scrutiny for the scene.

Critics pointed out the contrast between his reputed lifestyle and his involvement in the scene.

A user questioned: “He claims to leave the house in a state of ablution, but this is what he’s shooting?”

Saba Qamar previously described the show as a story about two unconventional individuals redefining love on their terms.

She explained: “Mrs & Mr Shameem tells the story of a couple who don’t abide by the stereotypical norms set by society.”

Her character, Umaina, undergoes a profound transformation from a naive teenager to a resilient woman, embodying both strength and vulnerability.

Meanwhile, Nauman Ijaz said:

“Shameem is not like the usual hero you get to see in series and films.”

He emphasised the need for more nuanced representations of masculinity.

Saba Qamar elaborated on the social norms the series seeks to challenge, particularly the rigid definitions of what constitutes a “good” husband.

She said:

“In our society, the ideal man is often defined by superficial traits – looks, wealth, and status.”

“However, Shameem’s character is effeminate, yet that does not diminish his capacity for love.”

Directed by Kashif Nisar, Mrs and Mr Shameem is infused with authenticity and emotional depth, allowing the story to resonate with viewers.

Reiterating the show’s commitment to presenting diverse narratives, Saba Qamar said:

“We define our marriage by our own rules.”

As Nauman Ijaz and Saba Qamar receive praise and criticism, their performances are undeniably pushing the boundaries of storytelling in the region.
