ZEE5 Global has announced its upcoming original film Chhatriwali, which stars Rakul Preet Singh.

ZEE5 Global, which is the world’s largest streaming platform for South Asian content, announced the news on December 1, 2022, which was World Aids Day.

Expected to be released on the platform early in 2023, the direct-to-digital film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar.

Starring Rakul Preet Singh and Sumeet Vyas in the lead roles, Chhatriwali aims to drive home a strong social message on the importance of male contraceptives and safe sex. And what better day to emphasise it on the significance of sex education than World Aids Day.

Set in Haryana, Rakul plays the quality control head in a condom factory.

Initially, she is shy and embarrassed about her job. But she soon realises the importance of safe sex and takes it upon herself to destigmatise the conversation around sex education.

The film sets the tone and delivers the message with humour and sensitivity while ensuring that the narrative is entertaining and family-friendly.

Producer Ronnie Screwvala, RSVP Movies said:

“We are happy to back strong female-led stories with a meaningful narrative and Chhatriwali is just that.

“Without sounding too preachy, we have made a mass family entertainer laced with an important message because the idea is to normalise conversations about sex education and safe sex.

“The power of cinema is such that it enables us to deliver impactful stories that entertain and educate audiences.”

Rakul Preet Singh said: “For me, every film of mine has been special but Chhatriwali is extra special for many reasons.

“After so many years in the industry, I am finally getting to headline a film and what better than an entertaining film with a thought-provoking social message.

“This World Aids Day, I join the fight against HIV by raising awareness on the importance of safe sex and the use of male contraceptives via my upcoming film, Chhatriwali.”

Rakul Preet Singh completed filming in December 2021. On social media, she wrote:

“Anddddd last night was a bag of mixed emotions.

“Happppy and content for creating something I enjoyed and believed in.”

“What a smooth journey Chhatriwali has been. Couldn’t have asked for a better team for my first title role film. @tejasdeoskar you made the process so seamless.

“A big shoutout for the entire unit for tirelessly working and not complaining! @rsvpmovies @ronnie.screwvala.

“Also a bigggg thank you to all my costars for being a joy to work with.”

Chhatriwali will stream on ZEE5 Global soon.
