Verma then assaulted his 73-year-old mother
A Punjabi lawyer was caught on camera beating his elderly mother.
The horrific abuse happened in the town of Ropar.
Asha Rani lived with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Her son recently passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest.
The abuse first came to light when she told her daughter Deepshikha that she was being assaulted by her three relatives.
Deepshikha managed to get her hands on CCTV footage from the cameras installed in her mother’s room.
When she viewed the footage, she was shocked by what she saw.
Disturbing footage showed Ankur Verma, his wife Sudha and their son brutally beating the elderly woman.
Numerous incidents from September and October 2023 showed Verma slapping and punching his mother.
Incidents also show Asha being slapped by Sudha and dragged around by her grandson.
In one instance, the grandson poured water on Asha’s bed and complained to his parents that she had relieved herself.
The Punjabi lawyer and his wife entered the room.
Verma then assaulted his 73-year-old mother as she lay on the bed.
He punched her in the back and slapped her repeatedly while shouting at her.
Verma briefly left the room before returning. He grabbed his mother by the hair and jolted her head repeatedly.
He continued to slap and punch her even after his wife and son had left the room.

Deepshikha took the horrific footage to the police and with the help of an NGO, rescued Asha.
During the rescue, Verma claimed he had been looking after his mother who was not in the right mental state.
Verma was arrested based on the CCTV camera footage that he had installed in his mother’s room.
He was charged under sections 327 (Voluntarily causing hurt to extort property), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
Verma was also charged under Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act.
A police official said:
“Ankur has been arrested and a case has been registered under sections linked to voluntarily causing hurt to extort property, wrongful confinement and Section 24 of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act.”
Asha was taken to hospital for a medical examination. Doctors found multiple bruises on the woman’s body, indicative of the severe physical abuse she had endured.
Deepshikha admitted she only became aware of her mother’s ordeal when she viewed the CCTV footage.
Punjab’s Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development, Dr Baljit Kaur said:
“The act of beating up the mother by lawyer Ankur Verma, his wife and son at Ropar, is highly condemnable.”
Since his arrest, Verma has been expelled from the Ropar Rotary Club and Bar Association District Ropar.
