Bollywood stars Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar attend TIFF 2008.

This past weekend, Preity and Akshay were among the hundreds of celebrities screening their films at the 33rd Annual Toronto International Film Festival.

Preity Zinta and Writer/Director Deepa Mehta screened their new film “Heaven On Earth” on September 6 as part of the Visa Screening Room Special Presentations at TIFF08.

Prior to the film, Preity briefly addressed the audience stating she was “very nervous” although she had no reason to be.  Preity’s performance in this dramatic role of an abused wife proved to be a breakout role for her, something very different than we have seen from her in the past.

“Heaven On Earth” was filmed in Brampton, Ontario (Canada) and was very well received by the audience.

Akshay Kumar, Twinkle, Neha Dhupia and Canadian-Indian comedian Russell Peters all took to the stage prior to a TIFF08 Gala Screening of “Singh Is Kinng” on September 7 at Roy Thomson Hall.

Akshay said he had been trying to get a movie into TIFF for years and was very excited to finally have a film shown at the festival.

Akshay asked the audience to “Check their brains at the door”, sit back and have a good time and enjoy the film, which they did.

Also shown on September 7 was “Slumdog Millionaire”, directed by British director Danny Boyle (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and 28 Days fame). The film is about an impoverished teenager named Jamal, (Dev Patel) who wins the top prize on India’s “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire”.

Jamal is not interested in the prize money but rather finding a specific viewer named Latika (Freida Pinto) who watches the show.  Dev Patel puts forward a stellar performance in this must see film that received a standing ovation from the audience.

Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan are also in the film but did not attend the festival. The director for the film won the festival’s main prize – the People’s Choice Award.

Here are photos from the festival featuring Preity Zinta, Deepa Mehta, Akshay Kumar, Twinkle Khanna (his wife), Neha Duphia, Russell Peters and Jamal.
