In Pakistan, a red carpet was reportedly rolled out to honour police officers who shot a doctor accused of blasphemy.

The incident has drawn condemnation from human rights organisations.

Dr Kanbhar was killed during a police encounter in Sindh province.

This was after he went into hiding following accusations he shared blasphemous content on social media.

Local police chief Niaz Khoso claimed that the shooting occurred “just by chance”. He stated that the officers were unaware of the doctor’s identity at the time.

The incident unfolded when police attempted to stop two men on a motorcycle for a search.

According to a police report, one of the men opened fire, leading to a shootout that resulted in Dr Kanbhar’s death.

The FIR stated that police identified Dr Kanbhar as he lay injured, noting that he was found with a pistol in his hand.

His companion managed to escape while firing at the police.

Although Dr Kanbhar was transported to Mirpurkhas Civil Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances of his death.

One police official stated that Dr Kanbhar was accidentally shot by his companion.

However, a relative has alleged that he was a victim of a “fake encounter”, a claim that local authorities have denied.

In response to public outcry, Sindh’s Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Linjar has called for an independent inquiry into the incident.

The unrest surrounding Dr Kanbhar’s blasphemy case was exacerbated by violent protests from certain religious groups who demanded strict action against him.

Protesters gathered outside a local press club, igniting tensions that led to attacks on police vehicles.

Authorities responded by detaining over 10 individuals involved in the unrest and filing charges against them.

Disturbingly, reports have surfaced of celebrations following Dr Kanbhar’s death.

This includes a video showing a red carpet made of rose petals laid out to welcome the police officers involved in the shooting.

Such actions have sparked further outrage, highlighting the need for accountability and the protection of human rights.

This incident follows another shooting in Quetta, where a suspect facing blasphemy accusations was fatally wounded inside a police station.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed grave concern over these extrajudicial killings.
