A BJP leader in Assam has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman who took her own life after her private pictures were leaked.
The deceased was identified as Indrani Tahbildar, an active member of the party.
She was previously the Vice President of Assam BJP’s Chamber of Commerce and the treasurer of Kisan Morcha.
On August 11, 2023, police received calls from Guwahati’s Bamunimaidan area and recovered the unconscious body from the spot, adding there were no marks of external injuries.
Officers said: “She was taken to a local hospital where the doctors declared her dead.”
It was concluded that she died due to a prescription drug overdose.
It was reported that Indrani had told some of her colleagues that someone was trying to blackmail her with her intimate pictures.
Her colleagues accused Anurag Chaliha of leaking the photos and subsequently driving Indrani to suicide.
In a statement, Indrani’s colleagues said:
“She was worried because that person threatened her of sharing the photos on social media.
“That could be the reason behind her suicide.”
Golaghat Superintendent of Police (SP) Pushkin Jain said they have received information about the incident but the matter is being investigated by Guwahati police and they are ready to provide full support for the investigation.
After his name was brought up, Chaliha was ousted from the party. He had been an invitee member of the BJP’s Kisan Morcha.
Indrani’s family also accused Chaliha of being responsible for her death.
A case was subsequently registered against Chaliha under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 384 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Upon knowing about the police case, Anurag Chaliha went missing.
A police officer said investigators tracked his mobile phone and social media accounts. Chaliha was eventually traced to a location in the district of Sivasagar.
He has now been arrested for allegedly abetting Indrani’s suicide.
The officer added: “With the help of local police, we arrested him from the Demow area on Monday night.”
According to officers, Chaliha used to be a tenant at Indrani’s house in Golaghat.
During this time, the two politicians are alleged to have had an affair.
After a falling out, Chaliha allegedly threatened to leak Indrani’s private photos.
When the pictures appeared online, she believed he had carried out the threat.
One BJP leader said Chaliha denied the allegation when he was asked about the incident.
