Rishab Shetty’s Kantara has been selected for the Academy Awards contention list in the Best Picture and Best Actor categories.
As a result, the Kannada film is eligible for Oscar members to cast a vote to push it through to the main nominations.
Hombale Films’ Kantara was a late entry in the Oscars race.
And with this, SS Rajamouli’s RRR and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara have begun their Oscar journey.
Rishab Shetty’s Kantara was one of the highest-grossing films in 2022.
The film, which raked in over Rs 400 crore globally, recently completed 100 days in the theatres.
Kantara was submitted for the Oscars 2023 and has now made it to the contention list in two categories.

According to a report, Hombale Films founder Vijay Kiragandur said: “We are ecstatic and elated at the same time after seeing the contention list.
“Kantara has been a divine blessing to us. We are making every effort to promote the movie and we will do whatever it takes to qualify for the nominations.
“We are already in touch with our foreign distributors for the movie campaign promotions. Kantara has been a wonderful and thrilling journey for all of us involved and we cumulatively take pride in how the movie has shaped and received appreciation globally.”
Voting for the Oscar ballots begins on January 11 and ends on January 17.
The final nominations will be out on January 24, 2023.
Kantara is written, acted, and directed by Rishab Shetty.
The film weaves in the Bhoota Kola tradition, practised in Karnataka, and the mythological story about the deity.
Set in a village in northern Karnataka, Kantara revolves around a Kambala champion.
The film was hailed for its visual excellence that captured the folklore and culture of the state.
Kantara also features Sapthami Gowda, Achyuth Kumar and Pramod Shetty in key roles.
After KGF: Chapter 2 and 777 Charlie, Kantara is the next big film from Kannada cinema.
The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023, at Los Angeles’ Dolly Theatre.
