Filmmaker Suresh Krissna on January 25, 2023, announced that he will soon re-release the 2001 action-thriller Aalavandhan.

The film stars Kamal Haasan in a double role.

This announcement comes a few weeks after he successfully re-released Baba starring Rajinikanth in the lead in theatres and made an impact at the box office.

Initially, the release of Baba was planned as a special gesture on Rajinikanth’s birthday last December.

However, owing to the excitement among film fans, the makers gave it a wider release across the world.

And the 2002 film opened to packed houses and performed well at the box office for several days.

After the success of Baba’s re-release, Suresh is now planning to release Aalavandhan back to the cinemas.

The film’s producer Kalaippuli S Thanu announced that the remastered version of Aalavandhan will be re-released on 1,000 screens across the globe.

He also unveiled a new poster and captioned it: “Soon in the theatres. He is coming to rule your hearts! #Aalavandhan”

Interestingly, both these films have something in common.

Aalavandhan and Baba were box office failures when they were first released.

Aalavandhan was a technical wonder at the time it was released, however, it failed to click with the audience at the time.

The film tells the tale of a serial killer Nandhu who escapes a mental institution to stop his identical twin from marrying the woman he considers the reincarnation of his evil stepmother.

Besides playing the lead roles, Kamal Haasan also wrote the script for the film.

It’s said that the animation sequences in the film that was used to blunt the impact of violent scenes inspired animated sequences in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.

Meanwhile, Baba was released on December 10, 2022, two days before Rajinikanth’s 72nd birthday.

His 20-year-old movie Baba was re-released in selected theatres across the world.

Fans who watched the re-release took to social media platforms to share the experience of watching the movie all again in the theatre.

They observed that some of the scenes and dialogues were edited in the re-release to fit Rajinikanth quitting politics.

According to sources, the re-released movie is said to have collected Rs 1.4 crore on day 1 worldwide.

Further, rumours are doing the rounds that Kamal Haasan will be part of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Thalapathy 67 in a cameo along with Vijay.

However, the news has not been confirmed yet.
