India ranked fifth in searching for "cartoon porn"
Exploring the intricate landscape of porn in India reveals a topic fraught with controversy and stigma.
The surge in technological advancements, particularly smartphones and high-speed internet, has significantly increased the accessibility of porn in India.
This heightened accessibility prompts concerns about its potential impact on social dynamics, relationships, and the younger generation.
Adhering to cultural principles and obscenity laws, sharing explicit content in any format is prohibited in India.
Violating these laws can result in severe legal consequences, including hefty fines and imprisonment.
These stringent legal measures underscore the authorities’ dedication to upholding societal norms and teachings.
Despite this, India stands out as one of the top countries in specific explicit-related searches and porn consumption habits.
An Unstoppable Habit
There’s no doubt that India is one of the top countries when it comes to searching for porn.
As noted by X user Imtiaz Mahmood, she tweeted that India ranked sixth in a list of the top ten “Porn Watching Countries According To Google”.
Pakistan took the number one spot, which is not a total shock as it has been widely reported that the country is the top consumer of porn for years, regardless of its illegality.
But, given how popular porn is in India, it is still punishable by law. As outlined by Writing Law:
“Under section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, it is punishable to sell, distribute, exhibit, circulate, import or export any obscene picture, painting, writing, book, pamphlet or drawing which is lustful or lewd or depraves or corrupt another person.
“The accused can be punished with imprisonment up to two years and a fine of up to Rs. 2000 for the first conviction.
“And for subsequent conviction, imprisonment can be extended up to five years and a fine up to Rs. 5000.”
However, the Supreme Court has stated that a person can still watch porn privately in their home.
Along with the law, the culture around sex work plays a part in the perception of adult entertainment.
Whilst being a sex worker is still met with judgement, large areas of India are home to women, men, and hijras who receive payments for their services.
Some individuals are prostitutes, whilst others are ‘entertainers’.
In a 2016 survey by UNAids, they reported that India had over 657,800 sex workers.
However, in 2021, Colombia University revealed that there are over 800,000 sex workers in India.
But these figures are likely to be much greater as sex work is still seen as illegitimate work and registering with this occupation on documents is unlikely.
Therefore, the culture around sexuality is very high within India, as it has been historically.
Additionally, the progress of a more technological world means more people have access to porn.
With this comes an exploration of different porn categories, fetishes and interests.
Each individual has their fantasies but what does India search for when it comes to porn?
Using Google Trends, DESIblitz looked at the statistics for porn-related searches and habits in India.
These terms were the most popular in India as of January 2024 and can be subject to change.
“Aunty Porn”
India is the top-ranking country in searching for “aunty porn”.
However, this seems to be a popular term within South Asia as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are all in the top five.
If we break down the search even further, Indian cities and villages that take the top spots for “aunty porn”.
Thrikkariyoor, Kurhadwadi, and Alesur are the top three regions of India for this term.
“Rape Sex”
Perhaps one of the more surprising revelations during this research was that “rape sex” was one of the most popular searches in India.
Sri Lanka was the country searching for this the most and Nepal was a close second.
India took third position and Bangladesh came fourth. Pakistan ranked seventh.
There’s no denying that there is a massive rape issue within India and across South Asia.
This stems from a lack of equality, women’s rights, and more importantly, their protection.
So, for this to be among the top searches of sexual content is quite alarming and disheartening, given the seriousness of such a problem.
“Ts Boy”
“Ts” is an abbreviation of transexual, and refers to the growing LGBTQ+ community in India.
“Ts Boy” is associated with individuals who were born female but instead transition to become a man.
Some men may choose to undergo surgeries to align with their gender identity.
It’s quite interesting to see that this term is so highly searched for in India, ranking third.
Despite the prevalence of the LBGTQ+ community, the shame and dishonour associated with being trans is widespread.
Equally, when we checked Google Trends for phrases like “ts boy porn” or “ts boy sex”, India was among the top two nations, along with the UK.
In contrast, the phrase “ts girl” was less popular, with India taking the eighth spot.
“Nude Girl”
Again, India ranked third for the search “nude girl”.
Sri Lanka was number one and Bangladesh was second.
Pakistan was the fifth highest country searching for this phrase.
As mentioned before, the rise in technology means people consume porn in different mediums – whether it’s image, video, or now using AI.
Therefore, Indians use their smartphones or laptops to easily search “nude girl” to satisfy their desires.
“Sex Girl”
India took the fourth spot when it came to “sex girl”.
Undoubtedly, this term is for those wanting to see explicit content typically seen on websites between a man and a woman.
However, it may also hint at those searching for local escorts or prostitutes.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal were all above India, whereas Ethiopia was fifth.
Even though three other countries were higher than India, it was Indian villages and cities that were the highest-searching areas for “sex girl”.
These included Shergada (first), Adla (second), Ekauna (third), Alesur (fourth), and Buxa Forest (fifth).
“Nude Boy”
India was among the top five in searching for “nude boy”, coming in fourth.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan both ranked higher for this term.
It’s quite interesting to see as undoubtedly, men are looking for this type of content, and again hint at the ‘closeted’ homosexuals.
It also hints at the women who are looking for this material too.
In 2021, Shireen Jamooji noted for Homegrown:
“According to PornHub’s statistics from 2015 (we can’t access PornHub anymore, thanks to the ban!), over 30 per cent of users in India are women.”
Whilst they may not admit to this, the figure could be surprisingly higher.
“Young Girl Sex”
India ranked fifth for “young girl sex” with Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan all coming in higher.
A lot of individuals lust for younger partners and could turn to porn to fulfil this desire.
One cannot state the role of child sex abuse in South Asia and the culture of child brides or child sex workers.
This fantasy is a major taboo but is still common. And, many people may turn to porn to try and see that type of material.
But it’s important to note that during our research, the terms “child porn sex”, “child sex”, and “kid porn” did not bring any results from countries in South Asia.
“Cartoon Sex”
The last and perhaps most startling revelation regarding India’s porn searches and habits was the term “cartoon sex”.
This relates to animated porn, parodies, and cartoon characters.
India ranked fifth in searching for “cartoon porn” whilst the likes of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka ranked higher.
This type of fetish is globally popular, and there is a kick that certain people get from watching animated individuals.
This is especially evident when considering characters from a well-known video game/film/TV show.
These characters are put in a sexual context and it seems quite popular among Indians.
Despite prevailing social issues, there seems to be no restraint on the adult content that some individuals in India wish to access.
It appears that individuals are more inclined to explore ‘taboo’ or delicate areas in their searches.
Looking at porn itself might not be a major issue in a broader sense.
However, when considering this within the framework of India’s culture and the specific content people are searching for, it highlights the significant presence of porn in the country.
Examining certain search terms reveals that there are larger concerns at play beyond just the presence of porn.
With the widespread use of technology, India’s interest in porn appears to be much higher than initially assumed.
