A shocking case of domestic violence has gone viral which shows an Indian police officer brutally assaulting his wife.

In the video, Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (Prosecution) Purushottam Sharma is seen thrashing his wife while she tries to resist the assault.

It was reported that the incident took place after Sharma’s wife found out about her husband’s alleged affair.

In the video, Sharma is seen arguing with his wife. Moments later, he grabs her and pins her down on the ground as she repeatedly asks him to let her go.

Two men in the room are seen trying to stop the assault. Meanwhile, a pet dog barks as the assault continues.

After the video went viral, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the police officer was sacked.

He said: “The officer has been relieved of his duties.

“Action will be taken against anyone who holds a responsible position, but indulges in illegal activities and taking the law into his hands.”

It was reported that Sharma was confronted by his wife after she found him at another woman’s house.

This led to an argument before the subsequent assault.

Sharma’s son Parth sent the footage to state Home Minister Narottam Mishra and demanded that a case be registered against his father.

However, the Indian police officer said that if he has committed any wrongdoing then his son should ask why his mother was living with him for so long.

Sharma and his wife have been married for 32 years.

He said “My son should say why was she taking money (from me) since 12-15 years and going on foreign trips.

“After enjoying so much comfort in life, she has an obligation towards her family, to save its reputation.”

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma also wrote to Minister Chouhan on September 28, 2020, demanding action against the senior officer.

Rekha said that the crime was committed by a senior police officer and the matter is a serious concern for the NCW as the violence committed by a police official conveys the wrong message to society.

In her letter, she said: “I, therefore, urge your kind intervention in the matter and you may please ensure the person guilty of perpetrating such violence be appropriately punished to avoid recurrence of such crime.”

Despite the video showing Sharma thrashing his wife, it is claimed that he acted in self-defence and that his wife was the one inflicting the assault.

He pointed out an injury on his hand, claiming that his wife attacked him with a pair of scissors.
