the couple had been running the operation for over a year.
An alleged sex racket operation was busted by officers in Siliguri, West Bengal. Ten people have been arrested including six women for their roles.
This is not the first instance in which a sex racket was raided by officers in India.
Police officers raided a flat in the Hakimpara area of the city during the night of Saturday, July 27, 2019, after becoming suspicious that it was being used to run a sex racket.
Those inside the building were arrested including the alleged ringleaders of the operation.
It is believed that the sex racket was being run by a woman identified as Sabitri Ghosh and her husband Shombhu Ghosh.
On Sunday, July 28, 2019, police stated that the couple had been running the operation for over a year.
They explained that the suspects who were taken into custody included residents from Siliguri and Bihar.
According to officers, more than Rs. 66,000 (£790) in cash and explicit photographs of women were discovered in the flat.
Police seized the items which were to be used to help with further investigations.
The suspects were produced before a local court on Sunday, July 28, 2019.
The court ordered Ghosh and her husband to be sent into police custody for five days. The eight other suspects were remanded in custody while the investigation continued.
There have been a number of sex racket operations taking place throughout India and officers are working to arrest those responsible for exploiting vulnerable people for their own gain.
In one case, four people were arrested for running an operation in New Delhi.
It was a joint investigation between the police and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). The DCW had received a call from a man who claimed that there was a prostitution racket being run from a house.
Members of the commission arrived in the area and spoke to some of the residents.
After identifying the house, they saw four women entering the property. Soon, a group of men arrived and were seen making calls before entering the house.
The DCW informed the police and the building was raided. Three women and a man were arrested.
The women inside the house were taken to Aman Vihar Police Station where they said they were adults and engaged in prostitution out of their own free will.
It was heard that they received Rs. 250 (£2.80) per client and each woman “had to sleep with at least seven clients” each day.
While four suspects were arrested, further investigations have been continuing.
