A horrifying case of so-called ragging at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala, has come to light.

The case gained attention after a shocking video surfaced on social media.

The footage, allegedly recorded by the perpetrators, shows senior students subjecting first-year students to brutal torture inside the hostel.

It depicts a junior student tied to a bed as an older student repeatedly pierces his skin with the sharp end of a compass.

The victim’s cries of pain were met with laughter from the tormentors.

Further disturbing acts include pouring lotion over the inflicted wounds, forcing the victim to ingest the lotion and even placing a dumbbell on his genitals.

The assailants also attached clips to his nipples and tugged at them while mocking his agony.

The incident was reported after three first-year students, unable to endure the abuse any longer, filed a police complaint.

According to their statements, the torture had been going on since November 2024.

The juniors were allegedly forced to give money to their seniors every Sunday to fund their alcohol purchases. Those who refused were beaten.

The police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of five senior students – Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeeva (18), Rijil Jith (20), and Vivek (21).

They were charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act.

Authorities also confirmed that the accused have been suspended from the Nursing College.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with student bodies and human rights activists demanding strict action against the perpetrators.

Many have criticised the persistence of ragging despite strict laws meant to prevent it.

The case has drawn further attention as it follows closely on the heels of another tragedy.

In Kochi, a 15-year-old schoolboy named Mihir Ahammed committed suicide after immense bullying.

His mother reported that he was physically and verbally abused by seniors at school.

He was allegedly forced to lick a toilet seat. The continuous bullying ultimately drove him to take his own life.

Authorities have pledged a thorough crackdown on ragging in educational institutions, urging stricter enforcement of anti-ragging measures.

However, these recent cases highlight the urgent need for stronger monitoring and a change in campus culture to protect students from abuse.
