Rashid later ran away with a young woman
A 21-year-old Indian man from Yamunanagar, Haryana, has been arrested for getting married twice.
The man’s first wife reported him to police when she found out what he had done.
It was revealed that the man had his first marriage when he was 19-years-old. He got married for the second time in April 2019.
The first wife discovered her husband’s second marriage and filed a police complaint on December 11, 2019. Police have identified the man as Rashid.
According to Rashid’s neighbour, the woman told police that she married Rashid on December 3, 2017.
However, after their marriage, he would allegedly torture her for dowry. His harassment for dowry was worse whenever he was drunk.
The woman’s relatives had complained to her in-laws about Rashid’s behaviour but they did not listen.
Rashid later ran away with a young woman from the neighbourhood. His wife’s parents then filed a case against him and he was arrested.
The Indian man was jailed, however, the woman’s in-laws blamed her for Rashid’s imprisonment.
The woman told police that she was pregnant at the time.
When she gave birth to a girl, the in-laws taunted the woman and her newborn daughter.
Her in-laws began to say that Rashid will get married to the woman he ran away with.
Rashid’s parents arranged for him to marry the young woman upon his release from prison. Meanwhile, the wife returned to her maternal home due to the harassment she was subjected to by her in-laws.
On April 24, 2019, Rashid got married for the second time. However, his first wife did not know about her husband’s marriage.
When she eventually found out, she spoke to her in-laws but they threatened her.
This prompted the woman to approach officers at Farkpur Police Station where she filed a police complaint.
She explained the offence her husband committed as well as what she was subjected to.
On December 11, police officers registered a case against Rashid and his second wife for harassment, making threats and conspiring for dowry.
Police arrested Rashid on December 31. He was taken into custody before he was produced in front of a court.
He admitted getting married twice without divorcing his first wife. Rashid also confessed to initially running away with the young woman before marrying her.
In addition, he admitted to regularly harassing his first wife for dowry. Rashid was later remanded in custody.
