An Indian man has been arrested for murdering his live-in partner and chopping her body up into 35 pieces.

According to police, the murder happened in May 2022 but the matter came to light in November.

Aftab Ameen Poonawala allegedly strangled his girlfriend Shraddha Walker after an argument on May 18.

He then chopped her body into 35 pieces and purchased a 300-litre fridge to store her remains in. Over the next 18 days, he would leave his home at 2 am and dump some of her remains in Delhi’s Mehrauli forest.

Originally from Mumbai, Shraddha worked at a call centre where she met the accused.

The pair began dating and moved in together.

After Shraddha’s family disapproved of her relationship, the couple moved to Delhi and rented a flat in Mehrauli.

In September 2022, Shraddha’s friend told her brother that her phone has been switched off for over two months.

Her family checked her social media accounts and found no updates.

In November, concerned family members filed a missing person’s complaint with Mumbai Police.

During the initial investigation, officers discovered that Shraddha’s last location was in Delhi. The case was then transferred to Delhi Police.

Shraddha’s father informed police about his daughter’s relationship with Aftab and suspected that he was involved.

On November 8, Vikas Madaan Walker travelled to Delhi to check on his daughter. After finding a lock on her flat, he claimed Shraddha had been kidnapped.

In his police complaint, Vikas said Aftab frequently beat Shraddha.

Police subsequently arrested the Indian man.

During questioning, he admitted to killing his girlfriend and dumping her remains.

Aftab explained that he would frequently argue with Shraddha because she would pester him for marriage.

An officer said: “Poonawala told us that they often got into heated arguments because the woman wanted to marry him.

“In May, they again fought over the relationship and Poonawaala strangled her to death in the heat of the moment.”

Following the admission, police filed a murder case against Aftab.

Police have said that they are currently in the process of locating and recovering the victim’s remains. The knife that was used has not been found.

The matter attracted the attention of the Delhi Commission for Women and chairperson Swati Maliwal issued a notice to Delhi Police.

She tweeted: “Notice has been issued to Delhi Police over this horrific murder.

“How is it possible that such an incident happened six months ago, and no one came to know about it?

“Did the girl file any complaint for domestic violence or sexual abuse? Did the man have someone else’ support?”
