“He got into an argument with the staff"
An Indian man was reportedly stabbed to death with kebab skewers by eatery staff following an argument.
The incident happened in the early hours of August 28, 2024.
Harneet Singh Sachdeva had gone to Ketan’s Food Court in Tagore Garden, Delhi, with two friends and was allegedly assaulted and stabbed with kebab skewers.
The violence stemmed from a dispute, allegedly over a 30-minute delay in delivering Sachdeva’s order.
He placed an order but a delay resulted in him getting into an altercation with staff members.
Following the killing, police arrested Ajay Narula and his son Ketan, who own the takeaway.
The role of the restaurant staff is also being investigated after CCTV footage showed the Indian man being assaulted for nearly 10 minutes.
Police investigations revealed that Sachdeva left his house around 7 pm and visited the eatery at approximately 3 am.
A police officer said: “He got into an argument with the staff at the takeaway counter, located at the rear of the dhaba, over his order.”
Shortly after, a dispute broke out, resulting in restaurant staff contacting the owners, who arrived with backup.
The CCTV footage showed that Ajay, Ketan and their associates brutally attacked Sachdeva with the sharp rods used to make seekh kebabs.
Sachdeva, who lives in the neighbouring Chander Vihar, was taken to hospital by friends where he was pronounced “dead on arrival”.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vichitra Veer, said they received information from the hospital at 4 am regarding a person having been brought dead.
Further investigations are underway, with the police investigating why the eatery was operating in the early hours of the morning.
According to locals, many restaurants in the area operate beyond permissible hours, and fights tend to happen late at night.
They said most restaurants followed the ‘takeaway’ system to deceive the authorities.
Senior police officers said they would investigate the allegations.
A nearby plastic shop owner said: “Most of the restaurants in the Tagore Garden area serve food the whole night after putting their shutters down and continue to deliver online.
“People come in their cars and sit outside these restaurants that operate the whole night.”
Sachdeva was his family’s sole breadwinner and is survived by his wife and mother.
His mother explained that his wife was pregnant with their child.
She added: “What was my son’s fault that they killed him? We want justice for my child.”
