Two teenagers were killed after a fight over tandoori rotis at a wedding in India turned deadly, police said.

Ashish, aged 17, and Ravi, aged 18, were allegedly beaten with iron rods and hockey sticks after a verbal argument escalated into violence in Gauriganj, Uttar Pradesh.

According to local police, the pair were queuing for rotis late on May 3 when a row broke out with the groom’s cousin and some of his friends.

The groom’s cousin reportedly felt “disrespected and humiliated” by the incident.

Ashish and Ravi later left the wedding on their motorbikes, but were allegedly followed by a group of men.

The attack happened around 1 am on Sunday. The teens were beaten and left bleeding at the roadside, police claimed. Their motorbikes were also destroyed.

They were rushed to hospital, but Ashish died while being transferred. Ravi died shortly after arriving.

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Ashish’s father, Shiv Bahadur, said: “My son went to attend a wedding. He never came back.

“The victims were both students, full of life and promise. And all of this because of a few rotis?”

Another relative added: “How fragile have our tempers become?”

Shiv Bahadur filed a police complaint, and an FIR was filed at Gauriganj Police Station against 13 people, including eight named and five unidentified suspects, under charges of murder and rioting.

ASP Harendra Kumar confirmed that three of the named suspects have been detained for questioning.

Investigations are ongoing and more arrests could follow.

In India, instances of violence over food at weddings are not uncommon.

In 2022, a fight erupted in Kerala after the groom’s friends were refused poppadoms.

The friends had asked for more poppadoms. However, the catering staff refused.

This led to an argument between them and the staff.

Things escalated when more people joined in on the argument. Moments later, a fight broke out.

Two groups fought against one another. Meanwhile, people were heard screaming at the chaos.

At the venue, people were seen throwing punches. One man was seen hitting another man with his shoe.

Things got more extreme when some of the guests used catering equipment to attack one another. Chairs and tables were also thrown.

Another incident saw guests get into a fight with staff due to the poor quality of the food served.
