"It appears the elder brother had raped the victim earlier"
A 12-year-old Indian girl from the district of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, was raped and beheaded by her three brothers and uncle.
The three brothers, uncle and aunt of the victim have been charged. The eldest brother has gone on the run while the other family members have been arrested.
Police officers from Sagar police station said that one of the suspects is a minor.
The victim was reported missing on March 13, 2019. Her body and severed head were found in a field outside Berkhedi village on March 14, 2019.
The police initially offered a reward of Rs. 10,000 but later increased it to Rs. 25,000 to anyone who had relevant information about the case.
According to superintendent Amit Sanghi, the eldest brother, aged 22, did not let the girl go to school and instead took her to their uncle’s house and raped her.
The two other brothers, aged 17 and 19, then arrived and took turns to rape the girl. The victim’s uncle later sexually assaulted the girl.
Sanghi said: “It appears the elder brother had raped the victim earlier also. On that day everyone was out for work except the elder brother and taking advantage of this, he raped his sister.
“While in the act, the other two brothers, including the minor, came and they both raped her.
“Meanwhile, the girl’s uncle, who is in his late forties, also came by. Initially, he scolded everyone and then he too raped her.”
She was later strangled to death and beheaded when she threatened to report them to the police. After killing her, the men dumped her body and the severed head in a field.
A police officer said: “They beheaded her with a sickle and dumped the body in a field.”
Officers recovered the girl’s blood-soaked clothes and the weapon that was used.
The girl’s aunt came to know about the gangrape and murder but did not report it to the police. Instead, she misled the police by blaming it on a neighbour’s family.
She alleged that the girl was kidnapped and murdered due to an old feud.
When the neighbour was questioned, he informed the police that the eldest brother was involved. When police questioned the 19-year-old brother, he confessed to the crime.
A post-mortem confirmed that the victim had been raped. Police arrested all of the suspects except for the eldest brother, who escaped.
SP Sanghi also charged the girl’s aunt for her role in attempting to cover up the crime.
The superintendent said: “Our two senior officers collected all evidence and recorded the statements of the family members.
“When everything was pieced together, we found that she was raped and murdered by her brothers and uncle.”
“We arrested the uncle and two of the brothers.”
Police are still searching for the whereabouts of the eldest brother.
