An Indian dancer was shot in the face after she stopped dancing at a wedding in Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh.

The woman was part of a group of performers. She took a brief break which led to her getting shot.

The woman was identified as Heena Devi while the shooters were named as Sudhir Singh and his relative Phool Singh.

According to the police, on November 30, 2019, Sudhir had hired an orchestra to perform at his daughter’s wedding. He also hired a group of dancers who performed onstage.

The continuous dancing exhausted Heena and she briefly stopped to take a break, however, the two men began shooting in the air.

One of the bullets hit Heena in the face while two of the groom’s relatives also suffered gunshot wounds.

SHO Subhash Chaurasia explained: “After dancing non-stop, the woman was feeling exhausted and took a brief pause when Phool Singh started firing.

“Stray pellets then struck Heena Devi and two other men, Mithlesh and Kamlesh.”

One of the wedding guests had been filming when an unidentified man, believed to be intoxicated, is heard saying:

“Goli chal jayegi (shots will be fired).”

The man then encourages Sudhir to start firing, adding:

“Sudhir bhaiya, aap goli chala hi do (Sudhir brother, you should fire the gun).”

Following the shooting, the Indian dancer was taken to hospital in a critical condition. After surgery, she is in a stable condition.

SHO Chaurasia added:

“As soon as the unidentified man calls Sudhir to fire a shot, a bullet struck Heena’s jaw.”

“While Mithlesh and Kamlesh, two siblings who were also the groom’s relatives, sustained injuries to their wrist and leg.”

The groom’s relative, Ram Pratap, filed an FIR against the two men as well as the unidentified man who encouraged them to shoot.

Senior police officer Ankit Mittal said: “We are trying to arrest the accused. We are making all the efforts to bring the culprit to justice.”

Despite his promise, some witnesses said that immediately after the shooting, police arrived at the scene and helped Sudhir bring the wedding celebration to a close.

Witnesses alleged that Sudhir was not arrested at the scene because he is one of the village leaders.

Following their allegations, police arrested Sudhir and Phool on December 6, 2019.

It was reported that Sudhir had helped his relative go on the run.

They were booked under Sections 212 (harbouring offender) and 307 (attempted murder) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Illegal Arms Act.

Efforts are being made to arrest the third man involved.
