A police investigation is underway after an Indian bride gave birth. However, shortly after giving birth, the woman’s son went missing.

The incident happened in the city of Mahilpur, Punjab.

It has been alleged that a nurse at the hospital took the newborn and sold him to a family in a nearby village.

The woman had been married for just 28 days before giving birth.

On Friday, March 13, 2020, the woman experienced abdominal pain and was subsequently rushed to hospital. Doctors revealed that she was pregnant and in labour, leaving family members shocked.

At around midnight, the woman gave birth to a baby boy.

The mother-in-law explained that the woman was married in February, however, no one knew that she was pregnant, not even the woman.

When she complained of stomach pains, they rushed the newly married woman to the hospital where they learned that she was pregnant.

It has been claimed that a nurse was helped by another member of staff and sold the baby to a family for Rs. 60,000 (£660), but contrasting accounts have been given.

The mother-in-law said that the woman did not want to keep the baby because she felt it was an insult.

Afterwards, a nurse told her that if she does not want the child, she will give him to someone who does. According to the mother-in-law, the nurse gave the baby to another family.

The father-in-law claimed that when the Indian bride wanted to see her baby, the nurse refused and said she had given the child to another patient.

He alleged that the dispute went on for several hours.

Locals heard about the matter and believe that a nurse and female doctor sold the baby to a family in a nearby village who had been married for eight years but could not have a child.

Tehsildar (Tax officer) Bhupinder Singh explained that it is normal to look after a child for a set period of time before adopting them.

He went on to say that a child needs to be registered with the sub-registrar as part of the adoption process.

On the missing baby, he said that something like this has drawn suspicion.

One doctor said that the newly married woman discharged herself from the hospital.

Dr Sunil Ahir was aware of the matter and stated that an investigation is underway but the accused nurse is denying any wrongdoing.
