A police case is underway after an Indian Army Colonel allegedly raped his friend’s wife at his official residence in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Police said that the shocking incident happened during the late night of December 10, 2020.

It was reported that the Colonel carried out the attack on the woman, a Russian national after he had invited her and her husband over to his house for dinner.

The accused has been identified as Colonel Neeraj Gahlot, who is posted at the Central Ordnance Depot (COD) in Kanpur.

The matter came to light on December 12, 2020, when the victim’s husband approached the police to file a complaint.

He told officers that his friend Gahlot had invited him and his wife for dinner at his house.

The man said his wife was a Russian national but had been living in India for 10 years.

However, at the house, the accused allegedly gave his friend a drink that was laced with sedatives. After drinking it, the friend lost consciousness.

At that point, the Colonel allegedly dragged his friend’s wife into another room and forced himself on her. He also reportedly hit her.

Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar Agarwal said: “After shopping in the day, they went to the Colonel’s official bungalow in COD where the latter offered him a drink laced with sedatives.

“Soon after consuming it, he was knocked out of his senses.

“The Colonel then dragged his friend’s wife to another room and tried to force himself on her.

“She pushed him away and shouted, but he brutally assaulted her. The woman lost consciousness.”

The Russian woman later told her husband what had happened. He then accompanied her to the police station to file a complaint.

SP Agarwal added: “We have sent the woman for a medical examination and the report is awaited.”

A case has been registered against Gahlot under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.

A report of the medical examination is expected on December 14, 2020, however, the victim’s family allege that the police delayed conducting the test in a bid to save the accused.

Officers denied the allegation, adding that police teams were making attempts to arrest Gahlot.

SP Agarwal stated that the accused is currently on the run, but officers were working to locate and apprehend him.
