An Indian father has been arrested for raping a 10-year-old girl. The incident took place in the district of Raigad, Maharashtra.
It was revealed that the victim was a friend of the suspect’s daughter.
Although the incident happened on March 5, 2020, the matter did not come to light until March 7, 2020.
It was reported that the victim had been at her friend’s house when the father raped her. Afterwards, his 17-year-old daughter told her not to speak about the ordeal.
When the victim’s health began deteriorating, her mother came to know what had happened.
Police have identified the perpetrator as Manharan Patel.
On the day of the incident, the victim had gone to Patel’s house with her two brothers. His daughter had not returned home yet so the three children waited in the living room.
However, Patel allegedly persuaded the girl’s brothers to play in another room.
When they left, he switched off the lights and started molesting the girl. When the girl tried to scream, he covered her mouth and raped her.
The teenager soon returned and went to play outside with the girl. During this time, the victim explained what had happened.
Instead of helping her, the girl scared her friend into not revealing anything.
She later told the victim’s mother that she was not feeling well but did not explain why.
The matter came to light when the teenager spoke to another friend about the rape. The victim’s mother overheard the conversation and questioned her daughter.
When the girl revealed that she was raped, the mother approached the police.
It was discovered that the mother was initially reluctant to register a case. She admitted that she came from a poor family.
The mother feared being ousted from her home by Patel’s family if a case was registered.
Her fear to speak out stemmed from the fact that Patel is good friends with influential people, including Congress leaders.
There were reports that some locals tried to persuade the victim’s family not to file an FIR.
When the mother explained her daughter’s ordeal, police filed a case and officers were directed to arrest the accused.
The Indian father was soon arrested and is currently remanded in custody.
Based on the mother’s request, police have agreed to keep the case confidential and will not reveal her or her daughter’s identity.
