The gunman fired at Mr Khan from below
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been shot in what is believed to be an assassination attempt.
It was reported that a gunman opened fire while Mr Khan was giving a speech at a rally in Gujranwala.
He was taken to hospital.
Reportedly, Mr Khan was shot in the leg. He was seen with a bandage on his right leg and moved into an SUV.
He is currently undergoing an operation.
The gunman fired at Mr Khan from below when the ex-PM was standing on top of a container-truck to address his ongoing “long march” to Islamabad against the Shehbaz Sharif government.
He had been travelling in a large convoy of trucks and cars.
The incident, which took place about 200 km from Islamabad, comes nine months after he was unseated upon losing the army establishment’s confidence.
Barely an hour before the firing, he had told supporters in another part of Gujranwala, where he was scheduled to deliver a speech, that they should accompany him to a different part of the city instead, promising to speak there.
His party tweeted a video showing him boarding the container-truck from his black SUV.
The firing took place minutes later as he got to the container’s roof for his speech.
The gunman fired a pistol from the left side of where Imran Khan was standing.
It was reported that at least four members of Mr Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were among those injured.
They have been identified as Ahmed Chattha, Omer Meyer, Rashid and Faisal Javed.
PTI member Hammad Azhar said they are all stable and receiving medical care, however, one has since died.
PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said the shooting was a “clear assassination attempt”.
He said: “It was a clear assassination attempt. Khan was hit but he is stable. There was a lot of bleeding.
“If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out.”
The gunman has since been arrested.
The suspect said he shot at Imran Khan for “misleading people”.
“He (Imran) was misleading the people and I could not bear watching it so I killed him … attempted to kill him.
“I tried my best to kill him. I wanted to kill Imran Khan only and no one else.”
Having been unseated reportedly after losing the army establishment’s confidence in April 2022, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader has been demanding the resignation of the new central government.
Imran Khan’s two main opponents are rivals of each other too – the Sharifs’ Muslim League (PML-N) and the Bhuttos’ Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
But in the new government, they are together.
