"at least leave Shilpa Shetty alone"

Bollywood filmmaker Hansal Mehta has defended actress Shilpa Shetty amid the pornography case against her husband Raj Kundra.

Mumbai Police arrested Kundra on July 19, 2021 for his alleged involvement in a pornography racket.

Since the news broke, Shilpa Shetty has been questioned by police and trolled by the public.

She has even filed a lawsuit for defamatory content against her.

Now, Hansal Mehta has stepped up to defend the actress, and urges people to give her privacy.

In a series of tweets posted on Friday, July 30, 2021, Mehta said:

“If you cannot stand up for her at least leave Shilpa Shetty alone and let the law decide?

“Allow her some dignity and privacy.

“It is unfortunate that people in public life ultimately are left to fend for themselves and are proclaimed guilty even before justice is meted out.”

Hansal Mehta continued:

“This silence is a pattern. In good times everybody parties together. In bad times there is deafening silence.

“There is isolation. No matter what the ultimate truth the damage is already done.”

The filmmaker concluded:

“This vilification is a pattern. If the allegations are against a film person there is a rush to invade privacy, to pass sweeping judgement, to character-assassinate, to fill ‘news’ with trashy gossip – all at the cost of individuals and their dignity.

“This is the cost of silence.”

Hansal Mehta also went on to call out multiple trolls who responded to his tweets.

He released a follow-up tweet addressing them all on Saturday, July 31, 2021.

His tweet reads:

“So I spoke in support of Shilpa Shetty’s right to privacy and dignity.

“Who responds? The Sushant Singh Rajput trolls. The Arnab army. Who else?

“Don’t you see the pattern? Every bungled up national crisis has a corresponding celebrity controversy.”

Hansal Mehta’s recent tweet refers to the support he showed for Rhea Chakraborty following the death of her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput.

After SSR’s death, Chakraborty was trolled online and called names by the media.

In a series of tweets, Hansal Mehta wrote:

“Let her guilt/innocence be proved in a court of law for heaven’s sake.

“Last evening I met people with no remote connection to the film industry making sweeping statements and playing judge.

“Result of an exploitative and conscienceless media that conducts its own banana court for its own vested interests. At whose cost?”

Following Shilpa Shetty’s defamation suit, the Bombay High Court ordered various media platforms to take down their content on Friday, July 30, 2021.

The Court also passed an interim order, stating:

“No part of this shall be constructed as a gag on media.”
