GOLD becomes Fifth-Highest Opening Weekend Grosser of 2018

Akshay Kumar’s GOLD has become 2018’s fifth highest opening weekend grossing film in India. The film released on Wednesday, August 15, 2018.

The historical drama enjoyed a good opening weekend of 5 days by earning £7.9 million (Rs. 71.30 crores) at the box office.

GOLD is Kumar’s second film on the list, the first being Pad Man, another biographical drama which is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist who introduced low-cost sanitary pads.

GOLD grossed almost double that of Pad Man which shows the anticipation to see the story of India’s first Olympic success as an independent nation.

Despite facing competition from John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate, which released on the same day, the social drama was able to gather good footfalls at the cinemas.

These figures make GOLD the fifth highest opening weekend grossing film of 2018. The Bollywood blockbuster hit a total of 4000 screens in India and netted an opening day gross of Rs 25 crores (£2.8 million).

Only SanjuPadmaavatRace 3 and Baaghi 2 grossed more in their opening weekend.

Akshay Kumar stars as Balbir Singh who inspires India to their first Olympic gold medal as an independent nation during the Nazi era.

There was a large promotion for the film’s upcoming release, especially in Britain.

The city of Bradford was covered in gold lights during the week of its release. Certain scenes were filmed in the city including the Odsal stadium, a prominent part of the sensational film.

GOLD marked the Bollywood debut of television actress Mouni Roy and also stars Sunny Kaushal, Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh and Nikita Dutta.

It is produced under by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under their banner Excel Entertainment.

With the film being in cinema’s for less than a week, only time will tell how much GOLD will gross overall.
