A 12-year-old girl has been charged with manslaughter over the death of an 80-year-old man after he was injured in a Leicestershire park in September 2024.

Bhim Kohli died on September 2 after an incident in a park in Braunstone Town the previous evening when he was allegedly attacked while walking his dog.

The girl was charged with manslaughter and is due to appear on December 16 at Leicester Youth Court, sitting at Leicester Magistrates Court.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with murder and he is due to appear at Leicester Crown Court. He is expected to face trial in 2025.

Four other children – a girl aged 14, one boy and two girls aged 12 – were arrested in September on suspicion of murder, but were released with no further action.

An inquest opened and adjourned in November was told a postmortem showed Mr Kohli died of a neck injury, pending further tests.

In a statement at the time of his death, Mr Kohli’s family said:

“Bhim was a loving husband, dad and grandad. He was also a son, brother and uncle. He adored his grandkids with all his heart and loved spending time with them.

“He really was such a loving, caring person whose life was centred around his family.

“He has always been a very hardworking man and even at the age of 80 he was still very active.

“One of his great passions was his allotment, he would go every day to tend to his plots and was so proud of them.

“He also enjoyed walking the family dog Rocky on the park many times a day.

“Our hearts have been completely broken.”

Mr Kohli had lived in the same house in the residential suburb south of Leicester city centre for 40 years.

He previously complained to police about anti-social behaviour involving children in the area.

But no action was taken and Leicestershire Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to “prior contact” between officers and Mr Kohli.

The IOPC later announced that the force would carry out its own investigations, but the case would be re-referred if “further information comes to light which may suggest a link between police actions or inactions and Mr Kohli’s tragic death”.
