Bangladeshi actor Fazlur Rahman Babu is set to portray Polan Sarkar in the upcoming government-grant film Solte, directed by Zahir Raihan.
Babu is one of Bangladesh’s most respected actors and a six-time National Film Award winner.
Solte will celebrate the extraordinary life of Sarkar, a humble grassroots intellectual who became widely known for distributing books free of charge.
Babu confirmed his involvement in a recent interview, expressing deep admiration for the man he’s bringing to life on screen.
He revealed: “Polan Sarkar’s philosophy attracted me.
“Despite limited formal education, he became a light for others, distributing books door to door.
“His commitment to enlightening people through literature is rare and immensely admirable.”
Solte aims to honour that legacy through cinema.
Sarkar, who lived in the Barind region of Rajshahi, became a beloved figure by making literature accessible to thousands.
He promoted reading in villages often overlooked by traditional education systems.
Babu emphasised: “He found joy in reading and spread that joy to others. That’s what books do – they bring knowledge and happiness.
“Polan Sarkar made that joy accessible.”
The actor also praised the dedication of director Zahir Raihan, who reportedly spent considerable time researching Sarkar’s life before writing the script.
Babu disclosed: “He really immersed himself in Polan Sarkar’s life. That’s something you don’t often see in projects of this scale.”
Shooting for Solte has already taken place in multiple locations, including Kakonkhat in Rajshahi.
These places visually resemble the area where Sarkar spent his life.
Additional scenes were filmed in Dhaka and Bandarban, lending visual diversity to the narrative.
For Babu, Solte represents another bold step in a career built on choosing roles that defy repetition.
He said:
“I’ve always looked for characters that are different. That’s how I’ve shaped my journey as an actor.”
He continues to be involved in television and is currently in discussions for several upcoming films.
However, Babu stated that finishing Solte is his top priority.
Produced under a government grant, Solte stands as more than just a biopic; it is a cultural tribute.
Babu said: “I believe this role will resonate deeply with the audience.
“Polan Sarkar is someone whose legacy should be remembered, especially in times when access to knowledge is still not equal for everyone.”
