Dr Amir Khan issued important advice to hay fever sufferers as pollen levels begin to climb.

The medic shared a video on TikTok urging people to begin preventive treatment immediately.

He said: “Where are my hay fever sufferers at? As this is the time of year when the pollen count is starting to rise.

“If you have hay fever, like I do, you want to get ahead of the pollen count and ahead of your immune system rather than having to play catch up when the symptoms hit.”

Dr Khan warned that antihistamines and other treatments should ideally be started weeks before symptoms emerge.

He continued: “That might be now for lots of people but if already they’ve started, don’t worry, still do this.

“All of us with nasal symptoms as part of our hay fever, try a steroid nasal spray. You might say, ‘Oh, I’ve tried it. It doesn’t work’.

“But lots of them have been using it wrong and it takes at least a week or two to work.”

He demonstrated how to use nasal sprays effectively.

First, rinse your nose with salt water. Then, use the opposite hand to spray each nostril for a better angle.

@doctoramirkhann If you suffer from hay fever like I do – you might want to start taking your prevention medication now, steroid nasal sprays are the way to go #doctoramir #doctoramirkhan #doctor #medical #health #chronicillness #gp #gpbehindcloseddoors #doctors #whatieat #whatieatinaday #drkhan #mamkahn #eathealthy #healthyliving #healthy #fyp #fy #foryoupagee #protein ? original sound – Dr Amir Khan GP

Dr Amir Khan added: “You don’t need to close one nostril when you do it and don’t point your nasal spray straight upwards that’s not where the problem lies.

“Point outwards, this is where the allergy, inflammation and the swelling is.

“So pop it in, press release the medication and really importantly, don’t sniff. Just breathe out naturally.”

His advice resonated with viewers, with one commenting:

“Took me years to find the antihistamines that works for me. I start them middle of May for three months.”

Another said: “I use Vaseline around my eyes and nose as the pollen sticks to it as opposed to all going up my nose and in my eyes, obviously some still will but it actually helps.

“I’ve been using it on my son too.”

A third user shared: “I suffered really bad with hay-fever when I was a child my mum used to put Vaseline around the inside of my nostrils.”

Dr Khan’s message comes as UK temperatures rise and allergy season intensifies. Experts say early action is key to staying ahead of symptoms.
