Delivery driver Abid Muhammad, aged 29, of Hall Green, Birmingham, was jailed for 17 months after he sexually assaulted a young woman.

Warwick Crown Court heard that prior to the attack, he had offered the victim a lift.

Muhammad had been working as a delivery driver in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, on April 7, 2018.

At around 1 am, he offered to give the young woman, who was in her 20s, a lift home.

The victim accepted the offer and got into the vehicle, a white Transit van. However, on the journey, Muhammad became sexually suggestive towards her.

The delivery driver then started touching her under her clothing and went on to sexually assault her. Muhammad later dropped her off in Coventry.

The woman alerted the police and within hours of the offence being committed, Muhammad was arrested. He was subsequently charged with sexual assault.

On February 13, 2020, Muhammad appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Birmingham Mail reported that on March 3, 2020, Muhammad was sentenced to 17 months in prison.

Following the sentencing hearing, investigating officer Detective Constable Rachel Priestley, of Warwickshire Police, said:

“On the night of the offence, the victim put her trust in Muhammad to drop her home safely – something which he completely abused.

“Thanks to the bravery of the victim and the description she provided, we quickly identified him as the suspect and made an arrest.”

“Understandably, the victim has been left traumatised by this experience, and I hope today’s sentencing will bring her some form of closure.

“Warwickshire Police will always investigate reports of sexual offences and ensure perpetrators such as Muhammad are brought to justice.”

Cases of drivers sexually assaulting women after being trusted to take them home are unfortunately becoming more prevalent.

In one incident, a taxi driver from Scotland was jailed after he raped a drunk passenger.

The victim had been on a night out with friends on August 5, 2018. Anwar Chowdhury drove the woman from a taxi rank to an isolated road near Culloden Battlefield.

He then had sex with the woman in the back of his Volkswagen Sharan taxi while she was too drunk to consent.

It was heard that Chowdhury later called a member of her family to try and persuade the victim to withdraw her complaint.

Following the ordeal, the woman has been left “with serious psychological effects” and Judge Lord Uist said she “suffered greatly”.

The father-of-one denied rape and attempt to pervert the course of justice but was convicted in November 2019. Chowdhury was jailed for six years.
