"This is a fake video and totally untrue."

A deepfake video of Aamir Khan has circulated online.

In the 31-second clip, the star allegedly made remarks that endorsed a political party.

The clip showed Aamir wearing a blue top while the theme music of his television show Satyamev Jayate played in the background.

The deepfake video comes as the 2024 Indian General Elections approach.

According to the clip, Aamir Khan criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and supported the Indian National Congress.

The clip shows the star saying: “Friends, if you believe India is a poor country, you are entirely mistaken.

“Every citizen in this country is a lakhpati (millionaire).

“Everyone should have at least 15 lakh. What’s that? You don’t have the money? So, where did your 15 lakh go?

“Beware of jumla (false) promises.

“Vote for justice. Vote for Congress.”

The actor has lodged a complaint with authorities following the circulation of the video.

Spokespeople for Aamir addressed the matter.

A statement read: “We are alarmed by the recent viral video alleging that Aamir Khan is promoting a particular political party.

“He would like to clarify that this is a fake video and totally untrue.

“He has reported the matter to various authorities related to this issue, including filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai Police.”

“We want to clarify that Mr Aamir Khan has never endorsed any political party throughout his 35-year career.

“He has dedicated his efforts to raising public awareness through Election Commission public awareness campaigns for many past elections.

“Mr Khan would like to urge all Indians to come out and vote and be an active part of our electoral process.”

Aamir launched Satyamev Jayate in 2012. The show raised awareness for social issues affecting India.

These included child sexual abuse, dowry and road safety.

In recent times, deepfake material has plagued Bollywood, with many Indian celebrities becoming the victim of controversial and edited clips.

Actresses such as Rashmika Mandanna, Alia Bhatt, Kajol and Priyanka Chopra Jonas have all been targeted via deepfake videos.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Aamir will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which is scheduled to be released during Christmas 2024.

He is also currently producing Lahore 1947 which stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Karan Deol.

The film marks Sunny Deol’s first collaboration with Aamir Khan.
