Amir Khan has said that interior work of his £5 million building in Deane, Bolton, is set to begin.

The facility was initially planned as a wedding venue but work on the project stalled after beginning in 2015. Khan even asked fans to send him their ideas on what the building could be used for.

The boxer has now addressed fans on Facebook to tell them he plans to get the project back on track.

He provided an update, promising that interior work was set to begin. Khan wrote:

“Ready to rumble. Interior fit-out begins….. 60.000 sq ft building”

The post came after he had a meeting with Bolton planning chief Paul Whittingham.

The former world champion announced that the facility will become a “one-stop wedding shopping mall”, containing 18 retail units on the ground floor devoted to wedding businesses.

The project will also include three wedding halls and a restaurant, as well as a rooftop shisha bar. It is expected to create up to 200 new jobs.

Amir Khan is also hoping to develop a wasteland area at the back of the 3.5-acre site into housing. A spokesperson for Amir said:

“Amir is finishing off the wedding hall and we are hoping to have it all complete by August 2020.

“We will have 18 retail units on the ground floor that will be occupied by wedding-related businesses – a one-stop wedding shopping mall – also three wedding halls on the 1st and 2nd floor and restaurants on the 3rd floor, we are hoping to create 200 jobs for the local community of Bolton.

“Amir is also planning to build residential housing on the land at the rear and had a fantastic meeting with Bolton Council yesterday.

“Amir will see the job through and is overwhelmed by the support of all the local community.”

Bolton News reported that Khan also aimed to build a car park for 200 vehicles.

The initial proposals were for the building to be transformed into a wedding venue, banqueting suite and function hall.

When they were first revealed in 2013, the plans were welcomed by councillors.

Khan had planned to include a restaurant and bar on the ground floor, an 800-seater function hall on the first floor, a VIP restaurant on the second floor, a roof terrace and a car park containing 51 spaces.

He also suggested that part of the facility could be developed into housing, a hotel or a shopping centre.

However, plans were halted when the building became engulfed in flames. But now plans to develop the facility are set to get underway.
