"I don't have much hope for it."
Sunny Deol’s upcoming film, Border 2, is regarded as one of the most anticipated Bollywood films.
The film is a sequel to the 1997 blockbuster, Border and stars Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, along with Sunny.
The teaser for the film was released on December 16, 2025, but has received criticism for the visual effects in the clip.
Netizens termed the CGI as “poor” and “worrying”, with many appearing to dismiss the film as a result.
The audience took to X to voice their disappointment and frustration, soon after the teaser premiered.
One user said: “For a war film in 2026, this level of visuals is worrying. The execution is quite weak.”
Another added: “I mean, it’s good, but nothing sort of extraordinary.
“Looks like a cash-grab movie with poor visuals.
“The teaser looked very artificial; everyone could feel it was all green screen.
“I don’t have much hope for it.”
A third user declared: “Any sequel arriving 20–30 years after a blockbuster already makes me hesitant. Nostalgia rarely ages well.
“Border 2 looks no different. Same emotional cues. Same musical beats.
“Only, this time, the war is mostly happening on digital screens.
“The cast feels 50–50 and Sunny Deol doing the heavy lifting is too visible to ignore.
“For a film targeting a 2026 release, the content doesn’t feel future-ready at all.
“Already comfortable skipping this one.”
The teaser for Border 2 showed the characters played by Varun, Ahan, and Diljit rising from wounded and injured conditions.
Amid shots of aerial action, crashing waves, and endless gunfire, the troops repeatedly chanted:
“Where should our voice go to? To Lahore!”
Apart from its four leading men, the film also features Sonam Bajwa and Mona Singh.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is scheduled to be released on January 23, 2026.
Meanwhile, the legacy of Border has been stratospheric in Bollywood.
In the 1997 movie, Sunny played Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, who leads his troops bravely across the desert in a war against Pakistan.
The film starred Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, and Sudesh Berry.
It marked a historic success for the then-newcomer Akshaye Khanna, who shone with an unmatched gleam as the young Dharamvir Singh Bhakri.
While its visual effects may have attracted criticism, what remains to be seen is whether Border 2 will contain a story adorned with as much hope, patriotism, and glory as its predecessor.
