The first look at BBC legal drama The Split Up has been revealed, with new images presenting a glimpse at the new six-part show.

The series, created by Ursula Rani Sarma and based on The Split by multiple award-winning Abi Morgan, explores the high-stakes world of Manchester’s elite divorce circuit.

The Split Up introduces viewers to Kishan Law, a powerhouse British South Asian firm at the centre of the city’s legal elite.

At the centre is Ritu Arya as Aria Kishan, a rising star set to take over from her father Dhruv (Sanjeev Bhaskar).

But her mother’s death has cast doubt over whether Aria can assume the role alone.

Aria’s personal life also faces pressure.

Her upcoming wedding to long-term partner Neal (Danny Ashok) is complicated by their intertwined personal and professional lives.

Matters are further disrupted when a former flame (Dimitri Leonidas) unexpectedly returns to Manchester.

Alongside her siblings Maya (Aysha Kala) and Kav (Arian Nik), Aria must navigate the issues that divide family and love.

The BBC said: “Alongside her siblings Maya and Kav, whose own relationships and loyalties are far from straightforward, Aria must navigate the splits that divide family and those we love – and ask herself: who should you live your life for?”

The cast also includes Mawaan Rizwan, Sindhu Vee, Shalini Peiris and Tom Forbes.

The Split Up will also see guest appearances from Sir Lenny Henry, Jane Horrocks and Jameela Jamil.

Ursula Rani Sarma said: “Having admired The Split and Abi Morgan for years, I was honoured to be asked to bring The Split Up to life.

“As a writer passionate about representation, it’s a dream come true to place a contemporary British South Asian family centre stage.

“Diversity deepens our understanding, enriches our stories, and reflects the true fabric of our society.

“It’s thrilling to watch our amazing cast, led by Ritu and Sanjeev, bring the Kishan family to life.”

“I can’t wait for audiences to meet them and to witness the drama as it unfolds.”

Produced by SISTER in association with Little Chick, the six-part series is executive produced by Abi Morgan, Jane Featherstone, Bryony Arnold, Ursula Rani Sarma and Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC.

Co-executive producer Shamim Sarif also directs the series alongside Khurrum M Sultan.

Additional episodes are written by Sumerah Srivastav, Kaamil Shah and Sonali Bhattacharyya.
