Wigan Athletic saw a number of new appointments to their backroom staff and among them is Ashvir Singh Johal, who is a new First Team Coach for the Championship side.

Ashvir has been a coach for the Guru Nanak Football Club (GNG FC), a community club that was established in Leicester by a group of Asian men.

GNG FC grew and became more successful, winning city and county leagues. The team also toured India won games overseas.

In the 2000s, the club started to involve younger players and today they have over 10 teams.

In 2015, the team won the Asian Team Award. Representing the club, a proud Ashvir Singh Johal said:

“We need to create more role models for the younger generation and transfer the high representation of Asians in the Grassroots of the game to the professional level at the top of the game.”

In 2014, Ashvir became an academy coach at Leicester City FC, becoming the youngest Sikh professional football coach to do so.

He spent eight years at the club and has now been named First Team Coach at Wigan Athletic.

On Twitter, the coach wrote: “I am delighted to be appointed as First Team Coach at Wigan Athletic.

“Thank you to Leicester City for giving me the opportunity to go on an amazing journey over the last eight years.”

Ashvir’s appointment prompted many congratulatory messages on social media.

Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Kolo Toure was appointed as Wigan’s new manager, replacing Leam Richardson after he was sacked by the Championship club earlier this month.

Wigan are 22nd in the table, but won their last game against Blackpool before the break for the World Cup.

Chief executive Malachy Brannigan said:

“We are delighted that Kolo has become the new manager of Wigan Athletic Football Club, and the board are pleased that he is the man to take us forward.

“We received a high calibre of applicants for the manager’s job in recent weeks, in a very thorough recruitment process as we looked to appoint the right person for the role.

“From the earliest of conversations we had with Kolo, it was evident to us that he had instantly bought into the values of the club – with his enthusiasm, knowledge and immense desire to work and be part of Wigan Athletic shining throughout the process.”

Kevin Betsy also joined the backroom staff.

Their first game will be an away game against Millwall on December 10, 2022.
