Pakistan’s music industry is in mourning today after popular singer Asad Abbas passed away due to kidney failure.

Asad breathed his last on August 15, 2023. His death was confirmed by his brother Haider Abbas, who posted the news on Asad’s Facebook page.

The post read: “May the Almighty Allah expand his grave and give Asad Abbas eternal peace. He fought until the end.”

Asad’s health reportedly deteriorated and fell into a coma before ultimately passing away.

Since news of his death broke out, many fans and fellow celebrities took to social media to offer their condolences.

Mohib Syed wrote: “Famous Pakistani singer Asad Abbas has passed away. Please recite Surah Fateha for the departed soul. Rest in peace brother.”

Furqan Siddiqui said: “Singer Asad Abbas passes away after suffering from double kidney failure. He was on dialysis for the last 7 years.

“The Faisalabad-born singer spent every penny of his savings on his treatment and had finally requested his fans and the Government to support him.

“Unfortunately that didn’t happen and the talented artist left this world! RIP.”

Paying her respects, singer Nimra Rafiq said:

“He fought and kept fighting until he gave up. I’m ashamed that we couldn’t help him. May you rest in peace Asad Bhai [brother].”

Asad Abbas rose to fame as the lead vocalist for the band Meekal Hassan Band.

He was widely recognised for his rendition of the song ‘Kadi Aa Mil Sanwal Yaar Ve’ for the drama serial Raqs-e-Bismil.

In May 2023, composer and music producer Rohail Hyatt spoke on behalf of Asad, pleading for help with treatment.

Rohail stated: “The very talented folk singer Asad Abbas, who also appeared in season 6 of Coke Studio is in dire need of our support.

“To anyone who wishes to help him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him. Thank you.”

The following month, Adnan Siddiqui also took to social media in an attempt to raise funds for Asad’s treatment.

He said: “Asad has graced our lives with his beautiful voice, capturing our hearts with his soulful performances and musical genius.

“Sadly, behind the curtain of his immense talent, he is today waging a personal battle that has left him in a state of extreme financial distress.”

During an interview, Asad admitted that the doctors were not hopeful of a full recovery.

Asad had said: “I am undergoing dialysis but the doctors are not hopeful. They said I need to be shifted to America for treatment.

“I am in need of financial assistance, and I would urge the government to provide me with that. I have no car, and a family to support.

“I have been suffering from this ailment for seven years now, both my kidneys have failed.

“They tried to do a kidney transplant earlier but it was unsuccessful.”

Asad also revealed that he had to sell his properties in Pakistan in order to fund his treatment but that the money had finished and he still needed treatment.

Asad revealed that upon hearing of the severity of his illness, his mother could not bear it and lost her life after suffering a heart attack.

He comes from a family of talented artists. His grandfather Mohammad Sadiq was well known in the folk music industry while his brother is renowned singer Ali Abbas.

Asad Abbas had also sung songs for popular films such as Bin Roye and Jawani Phir Nahi Aani.
