Originating from Central America, the avocado is a powerhouse of goodness.

The fruit is incredibly nutritious and pack up to 20 vitamins and minerals that are vital as part of a healthy lifestyle.

They are naturally high in fibre, healthy fats, and contain more potassium than bananas, which help regulate blood pressure levels.

They are also linked with weight loss as your body is fuller for longer and less inclined to feel hungry quickly.

DESIblitz presents some quick and easy ways to incorporate avocado in your everyday meals.

Stuffed Avocado with Spicy Beans and Feta



  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 210g can red kidney beans
  • 1 large lime
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 banana shallot
  • 1 green chilli
  • Coriander
  • 85g feta
  • 1 large avocado


  1. Toast cumin seeds in pan. In a large bowl mix beans, lime zest and juice, tomatoes, shallot, chilli, coriander and toaster cumin. Add crumbled feta and toss.
  2. Halve avocados and stuff mix inside. Serve with coriander leaves and lime.

Turkey and Coriander Burgers with Guacamole




  • 400g turkey mince
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 85g fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp coriander
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 1 chilli
  • 1 lime
  • 4 bread rolls
  • 1 tsp sunflower oil
  • 8 hot peppadew peppers


  1. Mix together mince, Worcestershire sauce, breadcrumbs, 1/2 tbsp coriander and 1/2 onion with seasoning.
  2. Create 4 burger patties and leave to chill.
  3. Mash avocado and mix with coriander, onion, chilli, lime juice and seasoning.
  4. Brush burgers with oil and cook for 7-8 minutes either side until cooked through.
  5. Serve in rolls with guacamole and peppers.

Tex-Mex Chicken Salad



  • 400g shredded rotisserie chicken
  • 400g pinto beans
  • 1 lettuce
  • 150g fresh corn kernels
  • 150g fresh cilantro
  • 1 avocado
  • ½ Red Onion
  • 60ml fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp honey
  • Salt and Black Pepper
  • Tortilla chips


  1. Mix together the cooked chicken, beans, lettuce, corn, cilantro, avocado, and onion.
  2. Whisk separately the lime juice, sour cream, oil, honey, and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.
  3. Drizzle chicken salad with dressing and toss. Serve with tortilla chips.

Avocado Pani Puri



For the spiced tamarind and mint liquid

  • 250ml water
  • 1 tbsp pani puri masala powder
  • 4 tbsp tamarind sauce
  • 8 mint leaves

For the filling

  • 1 avocado
  • Zest of ½ lime, plus 2 tsp lime juice
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 spring onion
  • ½ red onion
  • 1 red chilli
  • Coriander leaves
  • Salt
  • 20 pani puri shells


  1. For the filling, mix avocado and lime zest and juice together. Add remaining ingredients and season.
  2. For the sauce, pour water in a bowl and add masala powder, tamarind sauce and mint, and stir
  3. Serve with fresh pani puri shells. Crack one side of the pani puri with your finger to make a hole for the filling.

Chocolate and Honey with Avocado Ice Cream



  • 375ml milk
  • 250ml double cream
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 350g avocado flesh
  • 1 lime
  • ½ lemon
  • 10ml dark rum

For the ganache:

  • 250ml double cream
  • 25g honey
  • 400g milk chocolate
  • 50g butter


  1. Boil milk and cream in a saucepan.
  2. Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and add half the milk to the mixture.
  3. Pour contents back into the pan and cook on low heat, stirring until mixture coats back of spoon.
  4. Take off heat and leave to cool
  5. Blend together avocado, lime and lemon juice and rum until smooth. Add custard and blend again.
  6. Pass the mix through a sieve to remove lumps. Put in plastic container and freeze for 4 hours, stirring every hour. Alternatively use an ice cream maker.
  7. For ganache, boil together honey and cream. Pour gradually on top of chopped chocolate to melt. Mix thoroughly.
  8. Leave to cool and beat in butter. Pour in ramekins and leave to set in the fridge for 4 to 6 hours.
  9. Serve with avocado ice cream and grated chocolate.
