Three brothers have been jailed for multiple sexual offences against girls in Leeds and Barrow-in-Furness.

The abuse took place between 1996 and 2010.

It was heard that Shah Joman Miah (Sarj) and Shaha Amran Miah (Jai) sexually abused two children at a Leeds mosque for years. The abuse started when the victims were seven.

The three brothers also targeted vulnerable and underage girls at a flat above their family’s takeaway in Barrow, Cumbria, between 2008 and 2010.

They gave them cigarettes, alcohol, food and hair extensions.

Sarj had a relationship with a 14-year-old, knowing she was under 16.

Around the same time, Shaha Alman Miah (Ali) started a relationship with a 15-year-old girl. During their relationship, the girl was raped by his brother Jai.

In late 2009, the 15-year-old victim was threatened by Jai after speaking to the police. She was grabbed off the street by her hair and shoved in the back of a car by a man.

Jai was in the passenger seat. The man who grabbed her asked her what she had said to the police and told her “she would be dead” if she had told them anything.

Jai told her she did not know what he was capable of and that he would do anything to protect his family.

He also made threats to a woman who was due to be interviewed by the police in 2010 in relation to the brothers. Due to the threats, that interview never took place.

Barrister Tim Evans KC called it a “classic grooming technique”.

He said: “The brothers worked as a team and created an environment in Barrow in which each of them could abuse young girls.”

Jai, Sarj and Ali pleaded not guilty.

They were convicted in October 2024.

Jai was found guilty of 16 sexual offences against three girls, including rape. He was also convicted of two charges of intimidation and one of kidnap.

Ali was found guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child.

Sarj was convicted of sexually abusing three children. His 40 offences included nine counts of rape of a child.

After the conviction, Derek Artis, District Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West’s rape and serious sexual offence unit, said:

“Shaha Amran Miah, Shaha Alman Miah and Shaha Joman Miah groomed and exploited the girls in this case with no concern for them or the impact that such dreadful abuse from a young age would have on their lives.

“The CPS worked with Cumbria Police to build a strong case to put before the jury, including eyewitness testimony and extensive phone evidence.

“The strength of the evidence was such that the jury found the men guilty.”

“I would like to commend the women who have come forward and supported a prosecution in this case.

“I hope they can now begin to move forward knowing the men who abused and exploited them will face justice.”

On February 20, 2025, the brothers were sentenced:

  • Shaha Amran Miah – life with a minimum term of 20 years and 338 days.
  • Shaha Alman Miah – 10 years in prison and four years on licence.
  • Shah Joman Miah – life with a minimum term of 21 years and 232 days.
