Three young men have been arrested after they gang-raped a woman who had been walking to Jaipur.

The heinous crime took place on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

It was reported that the 40-year-old victim had been making the long journey despite the ongoing lockdown.

The woman had set off from Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan and was on her way to Jaipur, with the intention of reaching her home in Ajmer.

During her journey, she stopped near a school. At that point, three men approached her and carried out the horrific sex attack.

The matter was reported the next day after the victim went to a police station.

According to Superintendent Sudhir Chaudhary, the woman had filed a police complaint in Sawai Madhopur.

In the complaint, she said that she had been stranded in the district for a month due to lockdown.

The woman was desperate to return to her home in Ajmer so she decided to walk.

She planned to walk to Jaipur before continuing with her journey to her home.

She began her journey on April 23. The woman reached the village of Barrakhandi before stopping at a school in the village for the night.

At around 2 am, three young men turned up at the school. They saw the woman alone and approached her.

They then took turns to rape her before running away.

Following the incident, the woman went to Batoda Police Station and filed a complaint.

A case was registered and an investigation was launched.

Police identified the three suspects as Kamal Kharwal, Lakhan Raggar and Rishikesh Meena. A police team led by Thanaprabhari Sitaram Meena managed to locate the three suspects and arrested them.

Serious sex attacks are unfortunately common in India and this is evidenced by a shocking set of statistics relating to the state of Gujarat.

Statistics revealed that over 2,700 rape cases were registered with the Gujarat Police in 2018 and 2019. This amounts to three cases each day in the state.

The statistics were presented in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on March 11, 2020.

It revealed that Ahmedabad had the highest number of reported incidents with 540 rape cases.

The state government presented the figures in response to several questions raised by Congress MLAs.

The Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja stated that there were 2,723 cases registered by the police for rape and gang rapes in Gujarat between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019.

Many of the cases were registered in Ahmedabad with 540. Surat had the second highest with 452 followed by Rajkot with 158, and Banaskantha with 150.

The fewest number of rape cases were reported in the district of Dang with nine.
