"I had people not casting me, I had beef with people"
Priyanka Chopra has revealed why she started looking for work in the United States, away from Bollywood, despite being one of the top actresses in the industry.
Speaking to Dax Shepard on his podcast Armchair Expert, Priyanka admitted she was sharing the real reason for moving to the US for the first time.
She claimed she was being “cornered” in Bollywood.
Priyanka also said she had “beef” with some industry figures.
She said: “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood).
“I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”
At the time, her manager Anjula Acharia contacted Priyanka to ask if she would be interested in building a music career in the United States.
Priyanka had been filming Vishal Bharadwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf.
She continued: “This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I would require to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people.
“It would require grovelling and I had worked a long time by then that I didn’t feel like I wanted to do it.
“So, when this music thing came, I was like ‘f*** it, I am going to America’.”
Priyanka has worked with the likes of Pitbull and Pharrell Williams. She has also met Jay-Z.
But when her music career did not pan out, she quickly realised she was “much better at my day job”.
Priyanka Chopra cemented her place in the US with Quantico, becoming the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series.
She has gone on to star in the likes of Baywatch and The Matrix Resurrections.
Priyanka had previously revealed that there was a time when people in the Indian film industry tried their best not to let her work.
She said: “I have had people wanting to jeopardise my career, take away from my work, make sure I wasn’t cast just because I was doing well in what I was doing.”
Following Priyanka’s revelations about Bollywood, Kangana Ranaut came out in support of her.
She tweeted: “This is what Priyanka Chopra has to say about Bollywood, people ganged up on her, bullied her and chased her out of the film industry, a self-made woman was made to leave India.
“Everyone knows Karan Johar had banned her.
“Media wrote extensively about her fall out with Karan Johar because of her friendship with SRK and movie mafia Cruella who is always looking for vulnerable outsiders saw a perfect punching bag in PC and went all out in harassing her to a point where she had to leave India.
“This obnoxious, jealous, mean and toxic person should be held accountable for ruining the culture and environment of film industry which was never hostile to outsiders in the days of AB or SRK.
“His gang and mafia PR should be raided and held accountable for harassing outsiders.”
