"I am doing my bit to take the legacy forward."
Navya Naveli Nanda, daughter of Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and granddaughter to Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, revealed how her family name gave her career opportunities.
Navya is currently presenting her own podcast titled What the Hell Navya and frequently interviews Shweta and Jaya as part of the episodes.
Unlike many children from Bollywood families, Navya has stayed away from the glitz and glamour of Bollywood.
She also works at her father Nikhil Nanda’s company Escorts Group.
Although she is not in the same profession as her grandparents, Navya acknowledged her family’s role in influencing the trajectory of her career.
She said: “Everyone has a last name and everyone has a responsibility to carry their legacy forward, irrespective of the field that they are in.
“I am doing my bit to take the legacy forward and doing the best that I can to make my family proud.
“When we speak of privilege, I will give credit to where I am today to that.
“I don’t think I would be where I am if I didn’t come from the family that I came from.
“I was given a lot of opportunities at a very young age that most young girls my age don’t get.
“For me, it’s been important to make the best of those opportunities.
“I will give credit to where I am today, professionally and personally, to my family.”
Navya Naveli Nanda continued to state that regardless of the professional fields within her family, her elders have contributed to society in different ways:
“There is so much that our parents and grandparents have done before us that I can feel a responsibility with the kind of work that has been done before me and the kind of work I would want to take forward.
“Even as we talk about the surname, in both sides of my family, it has always been about giving to the people, in different shapes and forms.
“For instance, it can in the form of entertainment, it can be in the form of business.”
“As a family, we always believe in giving so that is just me creating an identity of myself in the way I am giving back but I am carrying forward that message or that legacy of always giving to others.”
Amitabh and Jaya are iconic veteran actors of Indian cinema, while Navya’s maternal uncle Abhishek Bachchan is also a popular actor.
His wife Aishwarya Rai is also a massively influential actress. A former ‘Miss World’ champion, Aishwarya has dazzled in Hollywood as well as Bollywood.
In an era where children from famous families are criticised in nepotism debates, star kids are known to try hard to shed the tag of privilege.
It is extremely mature and admirable of Navya Naveli Nanda to credit her family name for her achievements.
