"My husband and in-laws are repeatedly threatened"

A married Indian couple has gone to the police and requested security after receiving threats from her family.

The woman asked officers for protection from her family and relatives because they are constantly making threats towards her husband.

The woman explained that the reason for this is because she got married to the man despite her family opposing the marriage.

It was reported that the couple have been married since 2017.

The couple are originally from the city of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

The woman called the police and asked officers to take action against her relatives. She revealed that she decided to seek protection after members of her family beat her husband until locals managed to rescue him.

Shobha got married to Virendra Sagar against the wish of her father Jhamman Lal.

As her family were against the marriage, the couple were left with no choice but to move elsewhere. They left Bareilly and stayed away for nearly two years.

In early 2020, the married Indian couple returned to their home in the Baradhari area, however, Shobha’s relatives were not happy with them returning.

The family members started issuing threats and even assaulted Virendra.

The threats and attacks led Shobha to approach the police and ask them for security.

She said: “My husband and in-laws are repeatedly threatened by my father and cousins and we have requested police to intervene and provide us with security.

“My entire family is stressed and not able to concentrate on work.”

Following Shobha’s request to the police, Inspector Naresh Tyagi, SHO of Baradhari Police Station said:

“We are trying to see if this matter could be resolved through counselling because it is mainly a family dispute.”

“I have asked local police outpost in-charge to call both the families for a meeting. We may file an FIR only if required.”

In a similar case, a couple from Gujarat pleaded for police protection. They had a court marriage, however, it was against their families’ wishes as they are from different castes.

Arjun and Sonal uploaded a video in which they asked Thara Police Station sub-inspector MJ Chaudhary for protection.

In the video, Arjun alleged that he and his family are being harassed by his wife’s relatives as a result of his caste. He also said that his community is being targeted.

He explained his ordeal despite the fact that he got married to Sonal legally.

Officers took notice of the video and asked the couple to file an official complaint.

The Times of India reported that couples have taken drastic measures out of fear from their parents, whether they are married or unmarried.

Since 2017, over 50 couples in Uttar Pradesh have committed suicide for this reason.
