"I was just finding it very hard to have a child."
Kiran Rao opened up about the miscarriages she suffered in her life.
The filmmaker has one son with her ex-husband Aamir Khan. He is Azad Rao Khan, who was born via surrogacy in 2011.
Discussing her experiences, Kiran said: “The year that Dhobi Ghat was made was the year that Azad was born.
“And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages, a lot of personal, physical health issues.
“I was just finding it very hard to have a child.
“I was really keen to have a child, so when Azad was born it was… I didn’t have to make a decision.
“Obviously, all I wanted to do was raise my baby.”
After Azad was born, Kiran put her filmmaking career on the back burner.
She continued: “I enjoyed having Azad so much. Those were some of the best years of my life.
“I’ll never regret not having made a film in 10 years. I have no regrets because I enjoyed it thoroughly.”
Kiran Rao also shed light on Azad’s career aspirations.
She revealed that despite being the son of superstar Aamir Khan, the youngster currently has no interest in the film industry.
Kiran Rao said: “No, not at this point. He doesn’t want anything to do with films. He is not interested in films.”
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan had previously spoken about Azad’s birth through surrogacy.
The actor explained: “Kiran and I both wanted a child and when Azad was born.
“Both of us were very happy and we both wanted to be honest with people about it.
“We haven’t done anything wrong have nothing to hide and people should know about it.
“So, we also honestly told the media that we have had a child through IVF surrogacy and we are very happy that we did it.
“It has brought a lot of happiness in our lives.”
In 2009, Aamir also shared the sad news of Kiran’s miscarriage on his blog, posting:
“I have bad news, folks. Kiran and I lost our baby.
“Despite our best efforts we were unable to avert a miscarriage.”
Kiran and Aamir first met when Kiran was an assistant director on the sets of Lagaan (2001).
They married in 2005, three years after Aamir divorced his first wife Reena Dutta.
Aamir and Kiran divorced in 2021, after 16 years of marriage.
On the work front, Kiran Rao made her return to direction with Laapataa Ladies in 2024.
