"it’s not been able to happen that way.”

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor has stated that there are many star kids who have not made it in Bollywood amid the ongoing nepotism debate.

The actress has been open about her past struggles in the film industry.

She explained that success does not come to people just because they are someone’s son or daughter. However, Kareena did say that it provides them with an opportunity.

When Kareena started in Bollywood, her sister Karisma was already an established actress.

She revealed that she used to wonder behind the cameras on the sets and admire her sister’s work. Kareena also admitted that she aspired to be like her sister.

The Jab We Met actress elaborated further, saying that she struggled to step out of her sister’s shadow.

According to Kareena, there were always huge expectations and hopes riding on her in every film.

Kareena had previously talked about nepotism and said she could not be apologetic about it. In an interview with Barkha Dutt, she said:

“Twenty-one years of working would not have happened with just nepotism. It is not possible. I can take a long list out of superstars’ children for whom it’s not been able to happen that way.”

Despite being a fourth-generation actor in the Kapoor family, Kareena admitted that there were times in her career where she struggled.

“It might sound weird but my struggle is there. There is a struggle but it probably is not as interesting as somebody who comes in a train with just Rs. 10 [£0.10] in his pocket.

“Yeah, it’s not been that and I can’t be apologetic about it.”

She highlighted that some of Bollywood’s biggest actors are ‘outsiders’. She said:

“The idea is that today so many of our biggest stars whom you [the audience] have chosen, whether it is Akshay Kumar or Shahrukh Khan or Ayushmann Khurrana or Rajkummar Rao, are all outsiders.

“They are successful actors because they have worked hard. Whether it is Alia Bhatt or Kareena Kapoor, we have also worked hard.

“You are enjoying our films and watching them. So, it’s the audience that makes or breaks us.”

Kareena celebrated her 40th birthday on September 21, 2020. She had a low-key ceremony at her home and received a Wonder Woman themed birthday cake.

On the work front, Kareena will star opposite Aamir Khan in Laal Singh Chaddha. She will also be a part of the historical drama Takht, portraying Mughal princess Jahanara Begum.
