“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy."

Jurgen Klopp has shocked the world of football by announcing he will leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The 56-year-old German attributed his shock decision to “running out of energy”.

Klopp has been Liverpool manager since 2015 and is still under contract until 2026.

But in an announcement via the club’s media channel, he revealed he will leave two years early.

Jurgen Klopp revealed that he told the owners of his intention to leave in November 2023.

He explained: “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.

“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything.

“But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy.

“I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now.

“I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.

“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”

When Jurgen Klopp took over the club, he was tasked with overhauling a side that had come close to winning trophies but had often fallen short.

His first trophy for the club came in 2019 when Liverpool beat Tottenham to win the Champions League.

One year later, he led his team to their first Premier League title win in 30 years as they romped to victory with 99 points to see off their bitter rivals Man City.

Klopp has also won the EFL Cup, FA Cup and FIFA Club World Cup among others.

His decision to leave is a surprise given that Liverpool have reached the Carabao Cup final, are top of the Premier League and could end the season with four trophies.

The news has shocked many British Asian Liverpool supporters, with many in denial of the news after witnessing the interview.

Farid Khan said:

“Please take this decision back Jurgen. I’m on my knees.”

Priya Nair said: “Speechless. So sad that he’s leaving. The greatest manager in the world. Let’s win the Premier League for him.”

Paying tribute to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool fan Akash said:

“You turned us from doubters to believers just like you said you would. Thank you Jurgen… for everything.”

Vikram Joshi said: “Thank you Jurgen from the bottom of my heart for everything you have done for this club and making us believe again.

“Now go and win that Quadruple and go out on the biggest high ever.”

Some are now looking to the future, wondering if former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso will be Klopp’s successor.

Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are currently top of the German Bundesliga.

Liverpool have confirmed that assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz will also leave in summer, with the former likely to resume his own head coaching career.

Vitor Matos will also depart the club.
