"We gave her the chance to apologise, to no avail, of course."

An unidentified Indian woman allegedly told a group of young women that they should be raped for wearing short dresses. The incident happened in Delhi.

Shivani Gupta, from Gurgaon, had gone out to a restaurant with her friends when the incident occurred.

This prompted Gupta to confront the middle-aged woman at a shopping centre. The confrontation was filmed and it went viral.

In the video, Gupta can be heard shouting at the woman as they walk through a shop.

She demanded that the woman repeat what she had said, which she refused to do.

Gupta wrote on social media: “Today my friends and I were harassed by a woman at a restaurant for wearing a short dress.

“The middle-aged woman you’ll see in the video told seven men at the restaurant to rape us because she felt we deserved it for wearing short clothes and bashing her unsolicited opinion. For speaking up against her primitive mindset.

“Our instinct was turn away from the drama but supported by our colleagues, we took her on at a shopping centre nearby.

“We gave her the chance to apologise, to no avail, of course.

“Nothing moved the needle for her, not even another woman who learned the story on the spot and implored the ghastly woman to apologise.”

The woman later walked to a checkout and attempted to get staff to call the police. Gupta continued to demand that she apologised or she would upload the footage and said she would “make your life hell”.

The unnamed Indian woman replied: “Go ahead, you have that right.”

When another woman intervenes, the argument calms down. The woman takes Gupta’s side when she learns of the conversation and began debating with the woman.

She said: “I am the mother of two daughters. I don’t mind my daughters wearing a swimming costume and walking on the street.

“You don’t have the right to say anything about the girls wearing it.

“She has the right to wear whatever the damn she wants. Is she your daughter? No. Then zip your mouth.”

The other woman then responded: “These ladies want to wear short dressed to encourage everyone to see them.”

She then addressed Gupta’s parents and added: “Please control the girls, and control their dresses.”

The viral video has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, however, the woman has still not been identified.

Gupta and her friends threatened the woman with CCTV from the restaurant which they claimed showed her verbal attack, however, Gurgaon police have not received a complaint.

The woman has since apologised for her actions and said:

“I extend an unconditional apology to all the girls. In hindsight, I realise I was harsh and incorrect in my statement.

“If any, I should have offered my opinion in private. I was concerned, however, I realise that I should have been protective and progressive in my outlook and not conservative and regressive.”

She added: “As a wife, sister and a mother and more importantly as a woman, I value every woman’s dignity.

“Once again, I profusely apologise to all women whose sentiments have been hurt.”
