she planned to escape with the child when her husband arrived
Police arrested an Indian couple on Sunday, August 2, 2020, for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old girl in order to sell her for Rs. 1 Lakh.
The incident took place in the city of Daria, Chandigarh.
The arrest of the husband and wife has led police to believe that there may be a child trafficking racket within the city.
Station House Officer (SHO) Harminderjit Singh stated that the accused were identified as 50-year-old Sajan and his wife Kiran, aged 45, both residents of Mani Majra.
The matter came to light when a local saw the woman taking away the girl.
Sunil Kumar had been in the area when he spotted Kiran taking away the girl. She had been dressed as a beggar.
Sunil knew that the girl lived in the area. When he confronted Kiran, she claimed that she was taking the child to her father.
However, Sunil was suspicious. He started following her.
Kiran and the girl continued walking and she planned to escape with the child when her husband arrived on a scooter.
Sunil realised what was going on and raised an alarm. He managed to catch Kiran but her husband escaped. Sajan fled a short distance before a number of people in the area apprehended him.
Meanwhile, the police were informed and the couple were arrested. Sunil and the girl’s parents subsequently filed a complaint against the Indian couple.
Sunil told officers that he had confronted Kiran, however, she replied that she was taking the girl to her father who was out of the city.
During interrogation, the couple told officers that they had met with a person at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research who said that they would pay Rs. 1 Lakh for a child.
The couple reportedly accepted the offer and came up with a plan to kidnap a child.
While the couple has admitted to the crime, officers are verifying their statements.
According to police, the couple has five children and grandchildren.
Police have registered a case under Sections 370 (buying or disposing of any person as a slave) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused were produced before the court before being remanded in custody.
Police are currently investigating the possibility of a child trafficking operation within the city. They are working to find out if there are any missing children in the area.
