Alrhaan Kuaariaan (2005)
Despite some early success with his first two albums, Ishq Da Uda Adaa (2000) and Dil (2004), it was Diljit’s third album which really elevated his popularity.
Diljit came together with Balvir Boparai for Smile (2005), which featured ‘Alrhaan Kuaariaan’. And it was Boparai, the man behind ‘Dede Gera’, who wrote the lyrics for this hugely catchy track.
Even though it is now over a decade old, no wedding ceremony is truly complete without it. ‘Alrhaan Kuaariaan’ is one of the most classic bhangra songs by Diljit Dosanjh, be sure to relive it in our playlist below.
‘Kharku’ won a whole host of awards following its release in 2012. The track was named Best Bhangra Song of the Year at both the 2013 Brit-Asia TV Music Awards and PTC Punjabi Music Awards.
The song also led to Diljit winning one of his earliest personal accolades. The 2013 PTC Punjabi Music Awards named him as the Best Male Pop Vocalist.
‘Kharku’ arguably ignited Diljit’s dominance of the Asian music scene since its release. Simran says: “I have no words to describe how ‘Kharku’ makes me feel. The song brings back so many fond memories, and I’ve been a massive fan of his ever since.”
Such was the popularity of ‘Kharku’, that some forget about the other incredible songs by Diljit Dosanjh on the Back 2 Basics (2012) album.
Each of the tracks on the album could easily make this list, but, for DESIblitz, ‘Radio’ just edges ahead.
A wonderfully made music video accompanies a fast-paced track which you can’t help but bop you head along to.
While singing in the rain was already a thing, in ‘Radio’, Diljit brings you dancing in the rain. Check out the video in our playlist to see Diljit’s sensational dance moves in the pouring rain.
Proper Patola (2013)
‘Proper Patola’, featuring the Indian rapper, Badshah, is another one of Diljit’s award-winning tracks.
The 2013 single became the first Punjabi song to feature on the music video site, Vevo. It also won Most Popular Song of the Year at the 2014 PTC Punjabi Music Awards.
Following its release, Diljit went on to pick up Best Male Pop Vocalist for a second consecutive year.
Patiala Peg (2014)
Some argue that ‘Patiala Peg’ is the greatest bhangra song by Diljit Dosanjh, and they have good reason to. The smash hit is Diljit’s most viewed bhangra track on YouTube with 53.5 million views.
DJ Kay, of Ultra Sounds Entertainment, says: “’Patiala Peg’ must be played at any joyous occasion. It is one of the few songs which is certain to bring men on to the dance floor.”
At the 2015 Mirchi Music Awards, ‘Patiala Peg’ won Non-Film Song of the Year. Meanwhile, at the PTC Punjabi Music Awards, the track won Diljit yet another Best Bhangra Song of the Year accolade.
And at the 2015 Brit-Asia TV World Music Awards, Diljit’s hit won Best World Single and led to Dosanjh being named Best Male Act.
5 Taara (2015)
Following just behind ‘Patiala Peg’ in terms of YouTube views is ‘5 Taara’ with 51 million.
Once again, a blockbuster hit by Diljit led to him sweeping up awards. ‘5 Taara’ won Most Popular Song of the Year and Best Bhangra Song of the Year at the 2016 PTC PMA’s.
But why is Diljit’s music so popular? Aman says:
“Diljit’s songs are bringing back the classic bhangra vibes of the past. The production is amazing, and they really show what Desi culture is about. He really captures the roots of bhangra in his music.”
In an era where bhangra music is becoming more about cars, girls, and alcohol, Diljit’s work is refreshing.
Nikita adds: “’5 Taara’ is a unique blend of traditional and modern bhangra, and that’s what makes it so popular.”
Released in December 2016, it was a timely reminder that Diljit still rules modern bhangra music.
With the music by Jatinder Shah working beautifully with Diljit’s voice, the track truly showcases his vocal talents.
Gagan says: “When Laembadgini was released, I knew it was going to be yet another instant hit by Diljit. It’s another fun track which I love singing along to.”
