The second student victim killed in the horrific Nottingham attack has been named as Grace Kumar.

The 19-year-old University of Nottingham student was a hockey player in the first team.

It is understood that Grace was one of two students tragically killed on Ilkeston Road at 4 am on June 13, 2023. Also aged 19, Barnaby Webber is believed to be the other victim.

It is believed they were on their way home from a night out.

Nottinghamshire Police officers were first called to Ilkeston Road at 4 am.

A man in his 50s was then stabbed to death on Magdala Road before his van was stolen.

The perpetrator then allegedly used the van to try and run three people over on Milton Street, leaving one man in critical condition and two others with minor injuries.

Paying tribute to the two students, Shearer West, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, said:

“All of us at Nottingham are deeply shocked and saddened by the deaths of two of our students following a major incident in Nottingham city centre.

“I know our entire University community will join me in offering our deepest condolences to their family and close friends, as well as the other victims of the incident.

“Our thoughts are very much with them all at this incredibly difficult time.

“The university is supporting the students’ family and friends, as well as staff and students.

“Our security team is working closely with Nottinghamshire Police and the authorities to support the ongoing investigation into the incident.”

In addition to being a hockey player, Grace Kumar was also a talented cricketer.

Woodford Wells Cricket Club, in Essex, described Grace as a “fiercely competitive, talented and dedicated cricketer”.

She also played age-group cricket for Essex county cricket club.

Essex said: “We send our condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Barnaby and Grace during this extremely difficult time.”

Players will wear black armbands in tribute to the victims at the next game.

England Hockey said: “We are all deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Grace Kumar in Nottingham on Tuesday.

“Grace was a popular member of the England U16 and U18 squads and our thoughts are with Grace’s family, friends, teammates and the whole hockey community at this time.”

Prior to university, Grace had attended Bancroft’s School in north-east London.

The school said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death in Nottingham under tragic circumstances of one of our recent leavers from 2022.

“We are desperately shocked and saddened by Grace’s sudden death in these truly terrible circumstances.”

“She left Bancroft’s only last year and was a hugely important part of our community.

“An immensely gifted and dedicated scholar and sportswoman, she was hugely loved and greatly respected and admired by all.

“She was outstanding in every respect and will be missed terribly.

“It will take everyone in the Bancroft’s community a considerable time to come to terms with this shocking news, but above all our thoughts are with Grace’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody.
