Saree-Trends-2016

"The long Banarasi jacket with a shift or an overlap is in demand."

The saree is held as one of the most typifying pieces of clothing for South Asian women.

It’s the most popular item of clothing amongst desi females, and one of the oldest forms of fashion to date.

Chiffons, silks, velvets and cottons are just some of the materials that can be used to create the garment, each constructing a unique look and style.

Designers such as Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra have previously produced collections specifically for the saree, which increased its popularity not only in South Asia, but in the UK.

In recent years, fashion moguls have stepped out of their comfort zones and created outlandish, one of a kind designs like we’ve never seen before, and this year seems to be no different.

DESIblitz brings you the top saree trends that you are bound to fall in love with in 2016.

Saree Gown

Saree-Trends-2016

The fusion of Western and Eastern fashion is typified through the saree gown, and is incredibly popular amongst celebrities.

This trend is pretty much self explanatory. A gown is weaved into the shape and style of a saree, without any fly away parts, making it manageable for those who find it difficult to drape and wrap the material around them.

Designer Gaurav Gupta has previously created a collection specifically towards these gowns, emphasising the growing demand of this trend.

Sonam Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, and Sania Mirza are amongst the few celebrities who have rocked this look, increasing its widespread appeal in the process.

2016 is set to see a rise in saree gowns on the red carpet, and we can definitely see why.

Half and Half Saree

Another modern take of the classic clothing style is the half and half saree, which has gained vast popularity in recent years.

Unlike traditional attires, this garment is not restricted to specific patterns and designs, making it perfect for the party season.

Silk is the most common choice of material used for this ensemble, but cottons can be used too, meaning almost any aesthetic design can be created.

Its global appeal came after films such as Chennai Express (2013) and 2 States (2014) featured the avatar, and the rest is history.

Its Western style has made it a popular choice of saree for women everywhere, and a definite favourite for 2016.

Lace Saree

It’s an unsaid rule that lace is one of the classiest materials known to man, meaning it will never leave the trend circuit.

So if you can find your perfect lace saree, you are destined to look red carpet ready.

Much like sheer net materials, lace will similarly create a glamorous look without you needing to make much effort.

The intricate detailing creates a sophisticated look, and is extremely popular amongst the younger generation.

Wearing the right blouse underneath is crucial, so be sure to find one that compliments the soft texture of the lace.

Banarasi Saree

Saree-Trends-2016

Often considered one of the more glamorous Indian attires, the banarasi saree is loved for its heavy detailing and lavish brocades.

There was a time when these were kept in the back of the wardrobe and worn only occasionally.

But since the revival of Indian weaving techniques, this specific ensemble is now at the forefront of every fashionista’s mind.

Designer Namrata Joshipura goes so far to say that it is the modern day must-have, stating:

“Banarasi as a fabric is gaining popularity among the young. The biggest example is that the long Banarasi jacket with a shift or an overlap is in demand, and we are looking at creating more such designs.”

Vaishali S has also spoken out about the attire, commenting how:

“The Banarasi weave isn’t only limited to a sari. Designers today are creating a modern version of it by draping or constructing it in unconventional silhouettes.”

With designers making a conscious effort to bring back old school fashions, the banarasi saree is definitely one to watch.

Sheer Net Saree

Saree-Trends-2016

If you are a modern 21st century lady looking for the latest chic look, then the sheer net saree look is definitely for you.

Its lightweight feel is great for those summer strolls, but most importantly, its transparent material adds a hint of sensuality to your ensemble.

The sheer net saree has featured in many a Vogue issue, and is still a strong contender for 2016.

Its material provides a natural glitz look to an outfit, giving you that natural show-stopping feel that will definitely turn heads.

Sheer clothing is always a hit with fashionistas, and guarantees to create an ethereally feminine look.

Whatever style of saree you opt for, maintenance is key. Typically worn at parties and special occasions, they can be difficult to wear at times.

The layers of fabrics, the constant tucking and draping, and the long, flowing material can sometimes be unmanageable.

But when they look this glamorous, it is definitely worth the effort.

The saree is and always will be one of the most iconic items of clothing in the world, and these trends for 2016 will only add to their popularity.
