Pakistan’s cricket team has suffered a significant blow, as opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy due to injury.

This news comes ahead of their crucial match against arch-rivals India.

Zaman sustained a chest muscle sprain while fielding during Pakistan’s game against New Zealand in Karachi.

The match, held on February 19, ended in a disappointing 60-run loss for the hosts.

Due to his injury, Zaman was unable to open the innings and had to bat at number four.

The cricketer scored a laborious 24 runs off 41 balls. His discomfort was evident throughout his innings.

In response to his injury, on February 20, 2025, the International Cricket Council announced that Imam-ul-Haq would replace Zaman in the squad.

Fakhar Zaman expressed his disappointment on social media, stating:

“I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride.

“Unfortunately, I’m now out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but surely Allah is the best planner.

“I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning; the comeback will be stronger than the setback.”

Pakistan’s loss to New Zealand marked a challenging start to their Champions Trophy campaign.

They now face a must-win situation against India in Dubai, set to take place on February 23, 2025.

A victory is essential for Pakistan to keep their hopes alive for reaching the semi-finals.

Group A also includes Bangladesh, while Group B features Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.

Adding to Pakistan’s woes, young batsman Saim Ayub was also previously ruled out of the tournament.

He is recovering from an ankle injury sustained during a Test match against South Africa in January 2025.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reported that Ayub is progressing well but will be unavailable for at least five more weeks.

He is currently undergoing rehabilitation in England.

The PCB statement noted that Ayub remains committed to his recovery and is focusing on returning to full fitness.

However, the timeline for his return to the national team for the white-ball series in New Zealand remains uncertain.

As Pakistan prepares for their crucial match against India, the team will need to rally together in the absence of key players.

The pressure is on for the remaining squad members to step up and deliver a strong performance to keep their Champions Trophy dreams alive.
