The Deccan Chargers beat the Bangalore Royal Challengers by six runs at the final of the
Indian Premier League cricket match in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Hyderabad team were in great form and scored 143 for six in 20 overs versus the Bangalore score of 137 for nine in 20 overs.

The Deccan Chargers bowled with high energy, applied aggression to their fielding and fought very hard to make their way to victory in a final that had the twists and turns of a superb game of cricket.

Bangalore Royal Challengers captain, Anil Kumble, took out Adam Gilchrist for a duck in the first over of the match but the Deccan Chargers still managed to keep their momentum throughout the game. Andrew Symonds, made 33 from 21 balls and Herschelle Gibbs from South Africa batted a score of 53 not out, both giving the Chargers valuable runs to make the 143 to win.

With Bangalore needing 15 runs in the final over, the last was ball from Deccan’s RP Singh to RV Uthappa, who swung wide of mid-on out to Rao. It was enough to secure the win for the Chargers. A stark contrast from the 2008 IPL when they came last in the competition.

Anil Kumble, was named Man of the Match for taking 4 wickets from 16 balls.

Bangalore won five games consecutively to make it to the final. They played extremely well despite a poor start to the tournament. Anil Kumble proved he still had the skills to rally his players to this final stage. But Deccan Chargers showed that extra determination to beat Bangalore.

Initial games in the 2009 IPL went Deccan’s way but then they lost some close matches. However, dedicated players like Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma both made noticeable contributions under the leadership of captain, Adam Gilchrist, to help the Chargers to a victorious finish.

The Deccan Chargers made it to the semi finals thanks to both Kings Punjab and Rajasthan Royals not performing well in key matches. They played the Delhi Daredevils in the semi and won, thanks to Gilchrist making 85 from 35 balls to give them the lead they needed to make it to the final.

After a follow up speech to the match by Lalit Modi, entertainment at the end was provided Akon who performed Smack That and an appearance by Katrina Kaif.

The final points table of the 2009 Indian Premier League games held in South Africa, stood as follows.

Teams that have not faired well at all in the 2009 tournament include Shahrukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders and Sachin Tendulkar’s Mumbai Indians. Whilst, Preity Zinta’s Punjab team was close to reaching the semi finals.
